It is intended to hold a large mass meeting of unemployed here to-day, for the purpose of presenting a memorial to the Premier, the Hon. Mr Downer, on the suViject of finding work. London, April 1. , The weekly returns of the Bank of England were published to-day, shewing the proportion of reserve to liabilities at 40 per cent., or 1 per cent, below last week's, The total reserve of notes
and bullion amounts to £13,700,000, being £BOO,OOO below last week's reserves.
At to-dfiy's wool sales 12,300 bales were catalogued, making a total of 77,800 bales since the commencement of the series,' of which 13,000 have been withdrawn fiom sale. The tone of the the market remains weak. The Directors of the Bank of South Australia have declared a dividend for the past half year at the rate of six per cent, per annum, and carry forward and place to the reserve fund the sum of £4OOO. April 2. A discussion took place yesterday in the House of Lords on the question of a universal penny postage throughout the British Dominions. Lord Wolverton Postmaster-General, stated that he had uuder consideration a scheme ending in' the same direction as the proposals put forward in the Horse of Commons by Mr Henniker Heaton, and added that he had reason to believe the arrangements would prove satisfactory to the Colonies, The Daily News to-day states that Rassia threatens to occupy Bulgaria in the event of Prince Alexander decliningl to yield to the Russian demands with regard to the Governorship of Eastern Rouraelia, Mr Jessie pollings M.P. for Ipswich has tendered his resignation. In the Legislative Assembly to-day Sir Henry Parkes brought forward a motion having reference to the attitude of Mew South, Wales on the New Hebrides question. Sir Patrick Jennings, on behalf of the Government, stated the motion was taken as a vote of censure, and refused to deliver the Budget statement until the question Was settled. The House adjourned until Tuesday next,
