Tho receipts from Custonwluties for tlio Colony during the financial' year, 1885-6 amounted to £1,418,302. . The' estimate to £1,430,000, so that there is a deficit,' of £11,698, but as the. revenue for 1884-85 was only £1,413,860, there is an increase of £4438 over that year's return. Last month's receipts wore £110,460 against £137,292 for March of last year, ■ The returns for tlie chief ports for March were— Auckland, £22,504; Wellington, £22,443; Chrisichurch, £17,638; Dunedin, £29,909; March lias thus been , a poor and disappointing month in respect of Customs, and the hopes entertained that it would overtake the' eleven months 1 ,, deficiency of about £9OOO have not been realized! On the contrary, that deficiency has been increased by nearly £3OOO. The returns of beer duty for the financial year show that the total receipts were £55,166, against an estimate of £05,000, leaving an excess of £lO6. &or 1884-85 the amount received was £55,719. The revenue for last month was £5106, against £4925 for March, 1885.. The receipts for March in the chief towns were—Auckland, £1077; Wellington, £548; Christchurch, £97B'; Dunedin, £1064. The total railway revenue for the four weeks ending February 27 was £78,947, against £83,202 for the corresponding period of last year. The takings in the North Island were £25,567, against £25,049 last . year ; and in the South £53,379, against £58,153, The Auckland section shows a falling off from £9264 to £9021, and Wellington from £5978 to £5659. All the other North Island sections show so increase over last year, the most marjted being in the Napier section, whiclf has increased from L 4332 to LS3U. i fhe Wanganui sec.tion has inCreased from L 4580 jb,o L 5.014, On, the Hurunui-Bluff section, which has jjeen extended from 885 miles to 923, the falling off is from L 53,927 to L 48,946, The total expenditure for the four weeks has been L53,1(15, against L 53.593 last year. The amount for the North Island was L 18.688, against L 18,055 in 1885; and in the South Island L 34,476, against 135,538.

The question of payment cropped up at the meeting of the United District Board yesterday. Mr Bunny remarked that lie was already £lO out of pocket for railway fares in attending meetings, Ho did not seo why tho members of the Board should lie out of pocket any moro than people who occupied other public positions and got paid for their services, The members of the Waste Lands Board were allowed a guinea, and the United Board had iust as important functions to perform.-, Mr Taylor said that he and Mr Speedy had talked the matter over, and they thought half a guinea would about barely cover their expenses. Mr Bunny thought a guinea would-be little enough, Mr Buchanan pointed out that the Board had only power under the regulations to pay for tho expenses of locomotion'of members. When their accounts were submitted for audit, they might find themselves in tho position of some of the local bodies on the West Coast, Mr Bunny said lie would send his account in, and the authorities could either sanction or reject it. A meeting of tho United District Board was held yesterday afternooon, Present —Mr H. Bunny (chairman), Messrs W, C. Buchanan, M.H.R., G, Taylor, D. Speedy, and S. Danks. A letter from the Premier's office was read, asking the Board to appoint a Commissioner to represent them at the appeal from the City Counoil. On the motion of Mr Taylor, seconded by Mr Speedy, Mr Buchanan
was appointed, A letter from Mr A, 6. Johnson, the Secretary of the Benevolent Institution, was read, asking the Board to apply to the Government for Ll5O on behalf uf the Institution. It was decided to make the application as requested; A letter wa&read from, the Wairarapa West County Council, stating that they have no claim for charitable aid to makeagainst the ■ Board for the six months ending 31st • of March. The Town Clerk,. Wellington, wrote, saying that on appealing,.the Council felt no hostility on its part towards the Board. The. only object it had was to have the exceedingly vague provisions of the Act adjudicated upon, Inspector Browne wrote, under instructions from the Premier, requesting the Board to pay 7s Od cabhire inremoving<icripple,and3os for lodgings for a destitute child and other items amounting on the whole to £3 Bs. Mr Buchanan objected to the police obtaining unlimited cab hire. Ho moved that tho claims made by the police be forwarded to the Benevolent Institution, The motion was carried unanimously. A letter was road from the Burnham Industrial school, asking the Board to pay for tho maintenance of children in that Instiiution sent from the Wellington district. It was resolved to consider the matter when the Board had funds. On the motion of Mr Buchanan it was resolved that a return be prepared, to be laid before the next meeting, showing the amount of expenses incurred up to the present time, including member's expenses Secretary's salary, &c.; also the estimated expenditure in the same direction, up to the 31st March, 1887.
