United Press Association. New Plymouth, March 10. A match took place to-day Taranaki Rifles v Masterton Rifles, .and the shootin? was fair. Tlio Mayor of Ohvintchurcli received a telegram this morning signed J. B. Russell from Napier, " labor here very dear and scarce, hundreds." Ho attempted to read it to a gathering of unemployed men in the Cathedral Square, but Billcliff, the principal agitator refused permission until lie himself had finished speaking. Several men however interposed, and asked the Mayor to read it which he did, He lias telegraphed to the Mayor of Napier tor confirmation of the statement. The Mayor of Napier has received a telegram from tho Mayor of Christchurch saying he had received a wire from J. D, Russell sta'ing that labour was scarce and dear at Hastings, and requesting that 100 men be sent without delay, ■ The Mayor of Christchurch wished to ktiow whether the information was reliable, Tho Mayor of Napier replied that the Mi Russell referred to was connected with a draining contract at Hastings; there were plonty of unemployed in the district, willing to work at fair wages, and he requested that no men be sent on any account, Wellington, this day. Christchurch, this day, Accounts from Waikari state that a tussock fire near Ambe'rly destroyed all tho Road Board's bridges in the Omihi Valley, and swopt over 50,000 acres behind Mr G. H, Moore's house, and is said to have destroyed 10,000 shoep in one paddock alone.
