The Court Loyal Enterprise, A.0.F,, holds its regular fortnightly meeting this evening at the Forester's Hall, The petition againßt the election of Mr George Fisher for theTeAro Licensing Committee was dismissed. It was proved .he was a shareholder in the United Importer's Company at the time of the election, but not now. Mr Wardell, R.M. dismissed the case on the ground that the petition did not satisfy tho act at the time of the licensing election.- : " It was known an effort would be made to prevent the sale of liquor at the Hutt raco course, Tho publican's canvassed vigorously, but forgot to enquire in what licensing district the course was situated, They triumphantly returned their men for the Hutt district, only to see, five staunch teetotalers elected for Epuni District, in which the Wellington Racing Club's course lies. A petition has how been lodged against the whole of this committee on various grounds of irregularity, and, as it is understood that tho right to sell drink on the race courso is in serious jeopardy, considerable interest is folt in the result.

There is a rivalry in Groytown at present as to who shall have the right to carry on a quadrille clasß, which is tending so far as to damage all efforts in that direction,. It will bo remembered that last year a very successful class was hold under the auspices of the Greytown Fire Brigade, and thoy are at present issuing circulars to their patrons to assist them this year. As soon as it was mooted tho Private Brass Band thought that they should have a portion of tho loaves and fishes. This desire the Brigade were willing to further, and offered to cariy out a class in conjunction with tho Band ; but no! Tho Band, with questionable taste' and wn'so policy, would not agroo to this, but insists on the Brigade giving placo altogether to the Band, but the Brigade are not willing to take a back seat, and the result is that both will endeavor to carry out a class, and it remains to bo Been which will first cry pecavL In addition to these Mr Jorgenson has a class as a private enterprise. The peoplo (if Greytown should not be lost for lack |.of dancing. .- At dusk last night a passerby - was attracted by screams proceeding from the direction of Renall's creek, near Chain.berlain's bakers shop. Running up to tho spot the young man found a little girl standing on the bank of the creek pointing to the water and screaming loudly. At that instant up camo a constablo full tear, and, taking in the situation at a glance, he speedily divested himself of his coat and vest, and jumped into the creek, which at that part is some four or five feet deep in mud and water. The 'Constable felt about with his hands and feet under, the water-cress and weeds but

without success. By this time the child had ceased screaming, and at last an intelligent . reply was got from her in answer to the anxious enquiries. She said "I foil in. tho water." The' Constable, however, wasnotdoomedto have his efforts end in unprofitableness, for one of the bystanding youths, in his anxiety to know all about it, slipped ; off tho bank, head first, into the water, • and the Constable had the pleasure of fishing him out. The Evening Post says another disgraceful case of sticking up of unprotected females is reported at Newtown, and the description of tho offender tallies with that given in the previous assault at Kilbumie. In the present instance a young •girl was crossing a piece of grass plot near tho South Road about 10 o'clock in the evening, and was siezed suddenly by tins ruffian, who put his arm around her. She struggled to get free, and ran in the direction from whence she had como, the ground being most uneven. As a consequence she fell heavily and rolled some distance, receiving some severe bruises about her faoe and head. The miscreant, seeing her fall, exclaimed "My God ! she has fallen and 1 have killed her!" and fled in the opposite direction. It is to. bo hoped that this cowardly brute will bo indentitied and soon brought to justice, He will have a rough time of it though should ho fall into tho hands of some of the male residents of that locality, who are on the watch for hiin. ■

In the season of 1884-85 Messrs Hollard Bros, commenced in a small way atPetone to manufacture jam. They were prepared to retire from the field if the returns did not prove satisfactory, or to extend their business if the profits warranted. They wero.so well satisfied that they made additions to their factory last winter, and hayo minufactured treble, the quantity during the season \yhicli is now drawing to a close. The fruitgrowers of tho district have pndoavorod to keep their promises, but tho -dry season was against thorn.
