A somewhat sensational elopement is reported from here, A settler in one of the out settlements became enamoured of a girl employed at a hotel, The girl reciprocated, but her mother refused to give consent to her' marriage, and the couple decided to elope. The old lady got wind of this, and with her son took a horse and succeeded in preventing the consummation of the design. The pair, being about to leave in a trap, an altercation ensued between brother and lover, the latter getting the worst of it, The mother suggested they stipyld al} return to her hopse and talk the matter over. The latter's horse was placed at the disposal of the lover, and she, together with the daughter* 'got into the trap, the brother an<} would-be brother-in-law bringing up the rear. On arrival at the house tho two men dismounted, and the mother alighted, and when she had done so the daughter struck the trap horse and the swain jumped up, and they drove with all hastp to Waitara and caught the steamer for Auckland. The saddle horses were too jaded to be of any use in the pursuit, '
