It was unoccupied. \ '-..' Two cases of drowning are reported hero, the victims being children children under two' years of age. The first was a son of Al D. Baffle, brioklayer, Kinijland, and was drowned in a creek. The other WrtS a daughter of B. Mulholland, Freeman's Bay. Sho was drowned in a tub of water.
Bluff, this day. During the voyaeo of tho brigantwo Sarah and Mary from Newcastle, to the West of Invercargill a Beaman was thrown overboard, and drowned, by a lurch of the vessol.
Christohtkch, this day. A woman named Mary Scott, wife of a laborer, died yesterday. The doctor refused to give a certificate of the cause of death, and at the inqueßt held, the evidence showed deceased'said hor husband struck her behind the oar on February 19. The doctor said he regarded the case more as ono of alcoholism than anything. Death resulted from effusion of serum on the brain, andhecould not say whether this was induced by a blow which she said she had received. The inquest was adjourned until Wednesday next.
Bush fires have been raging for the past week in various parts of Banks Peninsula. Burnett, a farmer at Lebons Bay, is reported to have lost 300 sheep. The tires have been extinguished by the heavy rain last night. Auckland, this day. Tho To Aroha extension railway was opened to-day. A meeting was held in the evening to welcome Cardinal Moran. Mr Tole piesented an address from the laity, and and an address was also presented by Manries. Christchurch, this day. The licensing elections in country districts are.mostly going against the temperance party, but there is a strong feeling in favor of the moderates. There were 174 pictures at the Art Society's annual exhibition; bix more than last year, Miss Sperrey, of Wellington is largely represented.
