ACCIDENT IN A GRAVEL-PIT.
An accident occurred on Tuesday, at Mr D, McKenzie's metalling contract, FortyMile Bush road. Whilst several men were at work getting gravel from a pit on Mrs Dorset's land, without any warning a large slip of earth took plaqe which partially burled three of them, A man named Halberg was burled, all but his head, a lad aged sixteen, a son of the contractor was buried up to his middle, and the. contractor himself who came off rather more fortunately had his legs and feet severely bruised and strained. The rest of the men speedily set to work to disinter the sufferers from their painful situation, and when they were got out they were found' to be very much' exhausted, Apparently they had no bones broken, and, by his own request, Halberg was removed on a dray to his home at MaurifioviUe, whilst the l§d"w , as' «ajried to his bfOnie, wKich was near fo the acono of the accident, his father being able to walk with the aid of his comrades. disaster, and he was .very stiff, sore, and covered with bruises. It was found yesterday on examining the lad that his knees were considerably swollen, and he was unable to stand. It was deemed advisablotb take |liim to the Masterton Hospital, and he was brought down accordingly.
