When recently some of the leading business men of Masterton subscribed a sum to defray the cost of a nightwatchman, the inspector of police must have felt that the town was paying a somewhat doubtful compliment to the efficiency of his own araangements. We are somewhat surprised now to learn that he is diminishing the local force by removing Constable• Healy. The Inspeotor is evidently relying too much upon our voluntary efforts' in the matter of nightwatehmen. Does he want us to provide for the public safety altogether 1
