FIRST DAY.The first meeting under the Auepices of the above Club on the new course at Greytown, wascom'mencedyesterday, an,d proved highly successful, o,n the previous afternoon threatening ploucjs came u ; p, and fears of a wet day were entertained, which, were verified the next morning, rain falling steadily nearly the whole day. But notwithstanding this drawback, the attendance was quite as good as at any meeting during the last two or three years, The arrangements were very complete, and visitors were quite profuse in the encomiums passed. The now stand was well patronised, and from it a fine view of tho races all the way was obtained, Tho arrangements in connection with the totalisator,: were found to work admirably, the ÜBual orush being altogether avoided. Mr McFarlane was enabled to satisfy the whole of his client!.Over £ISOO wai put through the machine during the day. The new saddling paddock also came in for its share of praise, there being plenty of room for everyone. Though some of the privilege holders had cause for compUinton account of the weather, most of them appeared to do a good business. The grand stand refreshment room was presided over by Mr D. Barratt, who served upan oxcellentrepast, while the outside refreshment booths were in charge of Messrs F. 'D. Belling, (Masterton), and A. L. Whyfce, (Oartorton), who gave overy satisfaction to their customers, Thirsty souls inside the lawn were provided by Mr G. Jones (of the Foresters Arms), while Host Buckoridpe, (of the Marquis of Normanby) had charge of the other publicans' booths. There were a few shows and games, conspicuous by his smallness being the smallest man in the world, thirty inches high; but none, of them appeared to do a great business, the rain putting a dawper on everything.' The Masterton Volunteer Band was in attendance, and played lome excellent musio, which tended greatly to enliven matters. The officers of the Club did everything in their power to mako things pleasant, and Mr R, R, Armstrong, the energetic Secretary, was all), about, and. by his wurtesy to everypnehelpjd toinaka the
