NAPIER FIRE BRIGADES' DEMONSTRATION.
The following arrived too late for publication yesterday : . Napier, January 28. The Fire Brigades' competition yesterday attracted a large attendance of the public, over 3000 spectators being present. The arrangements were excellent, and there were no complaints or grumbling on tho part of the competing teams. The following is the result of to-day's competition :
Huso Reel Practice, for five men, First prize, handsome trophy, fivo gold medals, and £BO cash (presented by the Navier sheep fanners); total valuo £lls. Second prize, trophy, five silver medals, and £lO cash (presented by tho district legislators); total value £3O. Third prize, trophy, and £lO cash (presented by tho Napier Corporation); total value £2(l. Total valuo for event, £165, Dunedin, BSsecs 1 South Dunedin, 58'6sees ... ... 2 Napier, BiHseca 3 Ballarat East 60 2 aecs, Masterton 60.3 sees, Wiingauui 60'4 sees, New Plymouth 63'8 sees, Bangiora 63'8 bbcb, Auckland G4'B, Gisborne 788eca, Hokitika Bb''2 sees, Marion 99'8 sous. Ballarat City, Spit, and Naseby were disqualified, Lytteltuu, Darlington, and Port Chalmers teams were scratched. Naseby and Balliirat City failed to strike the diso with the first water, aud Spit failed to fix the Hydrant prop erly. South Dunedin were actually the smartest in point of time, but wore.fined five seconds for slovenly work. More than half the competing teams wero fined.
Engine practice for five men, First a handsome trophy and live gold medals (presented by the Fire Insuranoe Assooition), and £BO cash (presented by the Demonstration Committee), total valuo £BS; second prize, trophy and live silver medals (presented by the Fire Insuranoe Association,) and £5 cash (prcsonttd by the Demonstration Committee), total value £2O; third prize, trophy presented by Mr S. E. Cooper), and £5 (presented by Demonstration Committee), value £lO Bs ; fourth prize, trophy and £5 (presented by cabmen and expressmon of Napier; total value for event £125 ss. Spit, 50-Bsec 1 Dunedin City, slsec „, 2 Napier, Bl.2see ..' 8 Kumara, 65.8 sec 4 The other teams competing were—Masterton 63 sec, Auckland 80.4 see, (j7B.ee, Rungiora, RGsec, Hokitika disqualified, Gisbo'nio 81.6 sec, South Dunedin 80.6 sees, Ballarat East 91.4, Wanganui disqualified. Both teams disqualified were not fully dressed.
Ladder race for ono man; three prizes 11 guineas, Ballaret East 12.2 sec 1 Wanganui (first representative), 12.4s'ec 2 Ballarat City and Wanganui (second representative) tied with 12,6 for third place. In the run »fl Ballarat City won ill ll.lisec, making the best time, though taking only third place. They ran in couples until only four men were left in, when they ran against time. Thirty contested. Complaints were made by many firemen of the light uniform' and nozzles used by the Ballaral men, which appeared made for competion work, Tho competition continues to-morrow.
