Wellington, This day. The first day's racing under the auspices of tho Island Bay Racing Club took place at Island Bay yesterday. The weather was fine, with a fresh N. W, wind blowing, The course was in fair condition but recent diy weather had rendered it rather hard. The attendance was esti mated at about 6,600, among whom were Admiral Trvun and officers of H.M.S. Nelson, Sir George Whitmoro, Hons. P A, Buckley, J. A. There was considerable delay at the post, Mr Grace was successful. in getting the horses away to a good, start. Captain Webster was quickest on his legs, and rounding the top turn had half a length of a lead from Pasha, who had Leon on his quarters, Tasman, Nelson, and Ugly Buck running neck and neck together a length away. In this order they swept past the stand, Lady Emma and Administrator bringing up the rear. As they turned by the road, Nelson improved his position, and Derrett on Tasman' followed, Here Pasha dropped back. Passing Holmes', Captain Webster still led, with Nelson close up, and this position remained unchanged till the straight was entered, excepting that Pearl could be seen wending her way through the field. As vtho horses turned into the straight, there was littlo to' choose between Captain Webster and Nelson, but Pearly had run into third place. Armourer Bst, talebearer 7at lllb, Soudan 7st 101b, Rumour 7at 41b, and Capsize Cat 121b also ran, Soudan was made a hot favorite. Great delay tout place at the starting post, and there were fully a dozen false starts. When they wero aent away the horse* were all over the field, and Capsize had tho worst of it by fully three lengths, Miss Darpon, closely attended by Little Scrub, was quickest away, and thoy'led! the field at' a merry pace along the back stretch. Capsize made efforts to catch the leaders when near the road, but soon died away again. Entering the straight Little Scrub passed Miss Dargon, but Athol Daisy came with a brilliant dash, and cutting down horse after horse, soon had the premier position, which she maintained to the finish, beating Little Scrub by a length, who in his turn was two lengths ahead of Miss Dargon, Rumour fourth, Than followed Talebearer, Armourer, and Oapsizo in the order named, Soudan, a duzuti lengths' away, being last. The Selling Hack Race of 15 sovs brought out a field of nine, Matamau (late Hinau) winning rather easily. £6500 was put through the totalisitor for tho day.
