BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.
A meeting of subscribers to the Norfck Wairarapa Benevolent Society was held at the Institute, yesterday afternoon for the : purpose of considering the advisableltess of incorporating the Society muhi the 'Hospital and Charitable Aid Aot. There were present Mrs Paige, Mia Beard, Revs. W. E. Paige and D, Fulton, and Mr'Payton. On '.the motion, of the Rev. W. |. Paige Mr Payton was voted to the chair. The Chnirman stated thaj thepbjoct ol the meeting was to consider A exp*. diency of establishing the NoJSrWait* rapa Benevoleiit Society as a aeparaU ' institution under the Act,' He strongly urged the adoption of this course, feeling assured'that public opinion was in hi favor, and that town and countiy settlers could well afford to raise tho £IOO thai was necessary as' a preliminary. The Secretary suggested that th»y might become incorporated as a separate institution any time, and in the intwilT might give tho district board system /» trial. ..,■'•
■ Miss Beard expressed an opinion that it would be better to constitute th» Society a separate institution at once, The Rev. W. E. Paige said he was not hopeful of success in obtaining the fundi requited to constitute a separate institution, but he would not argue against the proposal, He moved that it was desirablt that the Society be constituted a separatr institution under the Act, and that town.' and country residents be canvassed fo* subscriptions. The motion was seconded by the Rev. D. Pulton and carried unanimously. Some discussion then ensued upon the manner in which the canvassing should bo carried out, the Rev. W. & Paig# suggesting that they might lea\tt'to th« lady members of the Society, who, h« knew, were good at work.of the kind. The Chairman said he had no doubt tho
money could be raised easily enough if they went to work the proper way. They should appoint a canvassing committee. Mr Paige suggested that Messrs Payton and Hogg might be appointed a canvassing committee.
Eventually it was resolved that tfo eiisting committee, with the additiwqfot" Messrs Pay ton aud Hogg, be a canvassing committee.
The meeting then adjourned for a week,
