MASTERTON-THIS DAY.
DAMAGING TREES, Andrew Nielsen, a boy about ten yean of ago, pleaded guilty to having, on 91st December last, cut down a tree of the value of over Is, on tho property of Arthur R. Bunny, but said it was on Boxing Day, The prosecutor said he was the ownor of a piece of land in Masterton, on which there was somo native bush, which he wajanxiousto preserve, Seventeen ot the tree's had been cut down, while others were barked. Ho hoped that if a conviction took place the Court would inflict punishment that would bo a caution,
His Worship said he looked upon this as a caso in which ho should try and stop a disease at the outset. He looked upon those who planted and preserved trees in the town as public benefactors, and as prominent among those who helped to build up the town. Mr Bunny was doing good by bringing tho case. Had he listened to mothers and fathers, he would have been doing a wrong to the community. The law in a case of the kind should be read out loud. He would try his very best to stop that sort of thing, as the whole town was the sufferer. It mattered not whether the trees wore planted or were indigenous, In reply to His Worship, the mother of the boy stated that hor husband was a laborer, and that tho boy was sure to get a good whipping. Uponthe_ promise being repeated, His Worship said he would only impose a forfeit of ss, with 9s costs, in default of payment, 24 hours' imprisonment. Alfred M'Ewen, 9 years, similarly charged, denied having committed the offence. (left sitting),
