MR BUCHANAN AT GREYTOWN.

(I)'hom our own Correspondent.) Greytown, January 16. Mr W. C. Buchanan met his constituents at the Town Hall, Greytown, last night. There were about 150 electors present. The mayor, Mr F. H. Wood, occupied the chair, and briefly introduced tho speaker, who necessarily tq' a "great extent wentorer the same ground as at Carterton. Referring to the repeal of theKoads and Bridges Construction Act, and the passing of the mutilated Local Bodies Finance and Powers Bill, ho said that ono of the results of the subsidy to the West County Council was that in a few months the'toll gate at the Waiohine Bridge would be removed. He dwelt at ■considerable length on the subject of railways and the District Railway Act, and condemned the policy of the present Government in no measured terms. In referring to the Hospitals and Charitable Aid Bill, he accprdedthe present Government praise for their efforts in this'direction.'; The Bill was a step in the right direction, though still'. imperfect. Mr Beetham and himself, had successfully fought against -the Wairarapa being merged into Wellington, and he congratulated them on fact that they were in a fair way to have the local hospital a spparat§ institution. He gave Mr Bal-

lance credit for his Land Hill, though he differed with him on some points, notably 'the purchasing clauses in connection with perpetual leasing. After a most exhaustive speech on the past session, and a reference to the future, he said ho would be willing to answer any questions; Mr Brooksmoved, andMrS. Revansseconded, a vote of thanks for his address, and continued confidence in him as their representative, which was carried with applause.
