The Committee of the Wairarapa Institute, Greytown, will meet on Monday evening, at 7.30 p.m. ■

Messrs Owen & Co., of the Hall of Commerce, have given a suit of clothes for the old men's race at the sport 3 on Friday next. A general meeting of members rff the Masterton-Opaki Jockey Club will be held at the Club Hotel to-night. Erery mom-, ber is requested to attend. The weekly meeting of the Mastorton Freethnught Society will be held tomorrow exening at the Theatre Royal. The musical selections for the occasion will be found enjoyable, Mr J, Barnard is at present engaged in making extensiveadditions and alterations to the premises of S, M. Maxton & Sons, of Greytown. When completed the bueinesß portion of the building will not only be very commodious, but an ornament to the town. That all the crops near Masterton ,are very poor this year is very emphatically disproved by a crop of wheat on the Akura plain belonging to Messrs Bannister Bros, which is estimated by experienced farmors to ijo very near 50 bushels to the acre. Thoro has been n steady decrease in the number of holiday makers who had stayed too long in Masterton, the efforts of the police to get them away apparently proving successful. Tho fact that harvest is in full swing will probably, in eome measure, account for the success, as they would find with very ready employment, There is nothing new in Masterton about the mysterious hand to-day, and it is probable that further developments elsewhere will bo awaited before any active steps are taken here. Detective O'Connor returned to Wellington by yesterday afternoon's train, his presence here being no longer necessary. Mr F. M'Dowell, who was charged in tho Resident Magistrates Court at Wellington on Thursday with embezzling money from Mr,J. M'Dowell, and discharged, has been re-arrested on two

charges of converting cheques to his own use in Masterton. The cheques we drawn by Messrs Lowes & lonia and Mr

A meeting of the Friendly Sooiotina' Sports Committee was held at the Temple Chambers last evening, when final arrangements for the sports on the' Park Oval on Friday next were made. A vote of thanks was passed to Messrs H. Owen ,& Co., of the Hall of Commerce, for thoir gift of a suit of clothes for the old men's race. An offer from Mr R. H.'Elliotto for the publican's booth was accepted. Mr W. Sellar was appointed time keeper. The meeting then adjourned till Wednesday next.

If anything further were required to prove that the Friendly Society s Sports which are to be held on the Park Oval on Anniversary Day will be a success, the entries which were received last night should supply it. They are as follows 1— Anniversary Handicap, 29; Walking 8; One mile, C; Hurdles, 18; Friendly Societies, 7. The number for the Anniversary Handicap is, we believe, the largest ever made in the Provincial District for a foot race, the nearett to it being 20\ Thero are certain to be large fields for all the events, and these invariably draw a large crowd of spectators. , • That the business portion of the public js thoroughly imbued with the- opinion that it was necessary to appoint a nightwatchman inMasterton, was shown by the fact that there was a very large attendance at the meeting held at theOlub Hotel last night to consider applications for the office. After the matter had been mentioned in the Daily. Messrs James Macara and A. Elkins took it in hand, and they wore not long in obtaining sufficient guarantors towards the necessary expenses. There were no less than 28 applicants for the place, some of them hailing from other townships in the district, A ballot was taken to make the selection, Mr E. Braggins obtaining a large majority. Mr Braggins lost no time in assuming his duties, for ho might have been seen last night peering into matters that looked as if they required his attention. The salary has been fixed at £2los per week

It seems, says the Evening Press, that the, recent efforts of the Government to lower the status of the Commission of the Peace in Now Zealand have ■ attracted attention in the neighboring colonies. A Hebrew betting firm at Sydney who are engaged in getting up a, monster lottery on tho Flemington champion race, have sent a circular to every J,P. in New Zealand, assuming, no doubt,'from what they have heard of them, that they are just the class of people who are likely to go in for that sort of thing, especially since the' laws of this colony forbid their doing their gambling at home. It is a shrewd dodge, for the Hebrews not only invite the New Zealand Magistracy to join in theswindlo themselves, but suggest that they should act as agents, and victimise the credulous among their friends.' If it were possible to obtain it, a return of the J.P.s who send their Llor more to Sydney in response to this impudent communication would be an interesting document. The last weather prognostications which have come to hand from Captain Edwin, do not promise to turn out any better than the majority of its predecessors. There was to be rain to-day, but although the Bky is overcast, there seems to be up chance of even a shower falling. The wind continues easterly, and this generally indicates fine weather in the valley. , .;-. A letter has been receive 1 from the Lands Department in reply toan application from the Masterton Mangotainoke Special Settlement Association for the reduction-of the cash-value put on the land taken up by the Association. It will be remembered that the.,value originally fixed upon, was £2 per acre, which was considered too high. The reply is to the effect that the land will bo valued by the Chief Surveyor or one of his staff, and that the maximum price shall not exceed 30 shillings per acre., The letter further states that 6,000 acres will be granted, clear of roads, and that the Association will be granted 320 acres for a township, which area will, however, have to be bought for cash, while tho larger block is to be on the perpetual leasing system. Tho news should be very satisfactory to the members of the Association,
