For some days past a report has been current in the district that Mr J.'Benall jjft.d papjured a strange animal on the banks .of the Euamahanga, on his property, Te White, "hiffc ij.Qfching definite was known about it. Mr Eenall informed us yesterday that he had captured an aujmaj pleasuring about four feet six inches in lengtjlj a fls covered all oyer the body with a soft brown fur about an inch long, the tail, however, reserabljng that of a large lizard, It had immensely powerful jaws and a double row of teeth, as well as strong tusks. It was webfooted. Ho secured it by a dog chain, by means of which, he tied it to a stump. During tho few days ft was in his possession it came to know him from other members of the household, and seemed to prefer his company, as when loft alone it generally gave a very dismal sort of a whine. It refused all oxcepfc vegetable food, On Wednesday last, on returning from a school picnic, he found that the chain had been gnawed in two, and that tho animal had disappeared. Mr Renall is making efforts to re-capture it,

Mr J. Renall acted. as handicapper, Mr J. McKenzio as starter, and Mr D. Mckenzie as judgo, while Mrs Pjko was judge and Mrs McKenzie handicapper for'the gjrls, The scenery at the spot is said to De magnificent, and all enjoyed the visit to it very much. It having ken decided to hold a dance in the evening, and the school-house being found unfit for such a purpose owing to the floor having a series o! inclines in it, Mr Renal) plaged one of the rooms in his house at the disposal of (jl}Q party. A dozen couples attended,- and danoing was kept up till 3 a,m, At midnight a spread was provided by Mr Renall, Excellent: music was provided by members of the: company, and all enjoyed themselves; thoroughly, except Mr Renall, who,'as will be seen elsewhere, sustained a peculiar loss durin? his absence that day. :
The guileless natiys turned up again at the Fielding sports pn Boeing Ray, For the' Maori raco three .entries were re- 1 ceived, and the 03m'petitbra agreed amongthemselves to divide the prize money equally.:. It followed that the'race was. a hollow affair, the first man coming in at a gentle trot, while the other two walked leisurely past the post, The trouble, however, began when the winnings came ,to be divided, the successful qompetitor ■when appealed to refusing to disgorge. Corne- '■"■■•■■ l ■ ' ' The following is from the Napier correspondent of the Observer, and sVould prove useful to owners of orchards;'— From time to time 'pars.' have appeared respecting the ravages of the grepnand brown beetles that abound at tip seagqn of the year, These beetles, like some moths, are privileged qusses—i.e., the birds won't eat. 'em. Indeed, in this country, the birds are highly discriminative in leaving severely alone all the insect pests, to gobble which they were expressly imported, and preferring to gobble our corn and fruit instead. Yet there is a simple check for this beetle pest, which deserves to be more generally known; and that is tho castor oil plant, which grows so freely here, Two or three years'a'gp, a w&ll:knq'wn resjdeijt of Epsom took me into his garden, and shewed me two or three castor oil bushes, asking me to look under them. I did so, and found the ground thickly covered with dead beetles, in some places oyer an inch deep. This indicates that the remedy is simply to plant clumps or belts of this vegetable in the orchard or kitohen gardon, which would soon reduce to something like order these' little green and brown gentlemen who are at present intoxicated with the exuberance of their own fecundity.'"' The gentleman above referred to had also a few leaves of the castor plant on a small table at his open study window, which he.assured me kept the flies out of the room.
