A CHANCE FOR THE UNEMPLOYED.
Our cable news to-day brings ub the intelligence that in consequence of the continuance of the wharf laborers' strike at Melbourne, shipowners there have resolved to obtain laborers from South Australia and New Zealand, and to offer the men long engagements, and pay their passages. Here is a chance for the unemployed of Auckland and Dunedin, If they want work they are now likely to have it offered to them. The question must however,"" arise whether the rate of wages will be acceptable to that rare phenomenon - the New Zealand pauper. We hardly think that the bait will be tempting enough, The day laborer earns far higher wages here than in Victoria, and so far as wharf hands are concerned, it is not many weeks ago since thpy struck in New Zealand. We are of opinion thai .vgry few men will be drawn from this colony by py offer from Victoria, and that the majority of those who go over will be •fpund almost useless.
