PATTI'S CHAGRIN.

A Gorman paper tells a good story of how Patti made a mistake in Paris some years ago.

She was willed upon at a private entertainment, to which she had been invited, to.sing a couple of songs. She did so, and the company overwhelmed her with praise. Next morning the gentleman' who had given the entertainment sunt her a magnificent present of diamond earrings. They were worth not less than 8000 francs. The prima donna expressed her thanks in a note, for tho present, hut she added a postscript to the effect that he had omitted 'to enclose her 3,000 francs which was her regular price for singing at private entertainments. The gentleman was very much shocked, but he got even with her neatly. Ho wont to a jeweller,-and bought another pair of earrings for 80 francs. Ho sent his servant to the diva with these cheap earrings, and a cheque for the amount she claimed, The servant said

Sa'My master received your note this morning,'' and lie finds your demand perfectly reasonable. Hero is a cheque for it. He also sends you a pair of earrings, but those which I left here yesterday were intended for another person. They were sent to you by mistake. Will you have tbo kindness to return thorn, and overlook the mistake,

Patti saw too late she had made a jam pas. With a face as red as fire she returned the magnificent diamonds, but she sighed heavily as the servant put them under Mb arm and went off with them,
