FIRES IN HAWKES BAY.
[United Press Association.]
Napier, thiaday.
v Pusli fires continue to, spread in all directions, and almost hourly reports arrive of homesteads burned,, stock destroyed, and large tracts of grass land devastated. The smoke hangs over the country like a black pall, making it nearly as dark as night, and it is impossible definitely to ascertain the damage. The township of Makatoku is surrounded, and yesterday fifty volunteer firemen left Napier for that, township to endeavour to. save property. When the last train left Makatoku at 2 o'clock the country was obscured by smoke, and nothing could be Been; but it was known that twelve houses in and near the .township, as well as Gundrie's largo sawmill, have been totally destroyed, and news has been brought of fresh fires having broken out. Telegrams received last night state there was no wind, and the. fire was not spreading, but if the wind rosß'again the railway Btation and many other buildings will go, The fire is raging over an area of six square miles. i /
