THE NATIONALITY OF THE BRITISH ARMY.
An analysis' of the composition of tho army in regard to the, nationality: of the non-commissioned officers and men' shows that at the beginning of the present! year the proportion of English-born Soldiers per thousand was 730, which ia Higher than in any of the years recorded, which extend back to 1868, when ths proportion of fingljghipt snl£'s9s'*per of Scotchmen and Irishmen shows a steady diminution since- 1868, when out of every thousand soldiers 94 were bom in Scotland and 308 in Ireland. Now the rate is 78 for
Scotland and 178 for Itelarifi, tho latter being the lowest while the Scottish find aparrallefoiily in'lßß2. The proportion of men borh in India 'a'Ad tho Colonies is 18, which is one more; in the four proceeding yeaw; .'ifiid of " foreigners only 1 per thousand, it. liaving been five in 1868 and the two following v years, , Tho actual number of men under the various headings at the. beginning of ! the year weroEnglish, 128,021; I Scottish, 13,720; Irish, 31,133; Indian \ ■'■■■ and Colonial, 2272; foreigners, 157; not ; . j reported, 3506—total 278,809. - I' -
