Mr Bunny reported with -reference' to the acquiring of an acre of land for the Featherston school, that he had. arranged with Mr Cox, manager for the late Mr Haines 1 estate, to lease the land for seven years at per annum, with a purchasing olaus? for £IOO, and he only awaited the assent of Mrs Haines, Mr Young's motion, moved at the last meeting of the Board, was further postponed till the next meeting, Mr Blair moved, and it was carried That in view of the unsatisfactory method at present in force in appointing pupil teachers to public schools, and as the efficiency and wellbeing of 'both scholars and teachers is so largely dependent on the best possible selection being made, it is expedient that Examining Committees be appointed, empowered to hold meetings, examine candidates for pupil teacherships, and grant certificates of competency ; that the Examining Cqinmittee for Wellington and the country districts shall consist of the head teachers of the Newtown, Mount Cook Boys', Willis-street, Terrace, Thorndon, and Lower Hutt schools: the Inspector of the district, Messrs Ypung and A. W. Brown for Wellington district, ant} Messrs Bunny, and Buchanan for Wajrayapq; that tl|e Committees for the Wairappa shall consist of the head teachers of the Featherston, Greytown, Carterton, and Mastertori main echoula, the Inspector of the district, and two members of the Wellington Education Board; that the Secretary to the Education Board shall be secretary to each Committee; that a register of names of candidates for pupil teacherships shall be kept, in which the names shall be entered in order of priority of application; that the Examining Committees shall meet and hold examinations In the pity of Wellington and in Carterton respectively, at iji,ieiyq|s jjof exceeding six months, on fif be fixed by the Board; that due notice by advertisement shall be given in the public Press of the time and place of meeting of each paining Committee; that those desiring ip jbieppme pupjl {pliers shall cause their nanjes, by application, ty placed on tlje register notjater than three ct^ye of the tamjning Cpnipiifcfcee; that a regfetratjng fee of. fjye shillings be charged, sijch fee to go toward the of' the examination; that the examination be pf q, general cl)ai'aqter ; that the Examining Committee haying satisfied themselves of the intellectual, educational, and physical fitness of the candidate, shall forthwith empower the Committee's secretary to issue in its name a certificate to that effect; that all applicants for pupil teacher approntigeghips shall be illegible for appointment who have not obtained tllti Examining Committee's certificate of competency; as far as practicable candidates who are eligible fflp,appointment as pupil teachers shall be appointed ii} % Qstjer in which their names stand on the registei', The interim report of the Inspector of Schools was received. It stated that the Terrace School had not come up to expectations'/that the Mount Cook Boys P<J Girls' Sphoojs were satisfactory, as also the Newtown School, The Te Aro School had proved satisfactory; there had beeii many changes in the lower Standards which might account for no better results.
