MASTERTON MANGAHAO SPECIAL SETTLEMENT ASSOCIATION.

A special general meeting of the Aasocia-_ tion was held in the Temperance Hall on Saturday evening, between forty and fifty members being present. The President,Mr W. W. McCardle, occupied the chair. " ! ThS minutes cf the last general meeting were' read and confirmed. The report and balance sheet was received and adopted. In answer to a member, the Chairman explained that the item of £2O was for exploring the block. The party who went up were appointed by the general meeting, and only charged for bare expenses. The members who had gone received no remuneration for their time. He trusted the explanation would prove satisfactory to those who had not been present at the time the sum was voted. In answer to Mrßawson, the Chairman said the idea of the Committee was not to draw for the sections for a few months, as they would only be locking up their money for no benefit. Two roads would lead into the block, one north of the river .Mangatainoke, having a length of about fivo miles, and one from Pahiatua three and a half miles in length. In regard to the quantity available for settlement, if there Was not enough in the present block they would not be able to get. any more east of the river Mangahao, but there was supposed to bo suitable land adjacent to the block on the West and South. There was no doubt that Mr Ballance would grant them sufficient land if it could be got. As regarded the plan of subdivision submitted by the contractor, Mr Ellison, it included land that was not suitable,' and was cut up in, a manner that was objectionable. Some 21 of these contained 150 acres, having 15 chains frontage, by a. depth of 120 or so of chains; Mr Girdwood explained that the Committee were taking action in the direction of having these sections altered into 100 acres each, and that would shorten the length. Sqiiie considarable discussion took place upon t])e size qf sections.

The Olv-iirman said if they could not supply the whole qf the members with sections he bad hopes that the Minister of Lands would give them land outsicjo of the present hlqck. The creation of falling the bush in the township in a block was considered. It was resolved that before the township was allotted the bush should be felled, but that it was too late to burn this season. The nomination of oflioel's then took place, the old committee being re-elected with tho addition of Mr Rawson. Tho following arc the committee for tho ensuing year:—Messrs McOardle (President), Mason (Treasurer), Redman (Secretary), Girdivood, Brown, Marriott, Hogg, Reese and Rawson. This concluded the business.
