We are requested to again remind our readers of Messrs Lowes & loins' extensive sale of Mr Freebody's stock and implements, furniture, and land, which takes place at 11 o'clock on Wednesday next, The Salyation Army holds a picnic in a paddock )j,oar the Railway Station, Masterton, on Boxing Day. A welcome is extended to all. A charge of 2s 6d will be made for luncheon and tea, and for tea only, Is Gd.. The brass band will be in attendance all day, and will, no doi}bfc, add to'the day's enjoyment. Some amusement was' caused in court during the progress of the affiliation case on Saturday, by a somewhat unguardod reply from the defendant, Tho defendant had been wiled as witness for the informant, and when Jus own counsel came to examine him, lie was addressed with "You are the defendant in this action, are you not? Are you the fatjjer of the child 1". Tho defendant evidently pnly caught the first portion of the double question," and auswored " Yes." The word had scarcely -escaped, when it was echoed in a loud and triumphant voice by tho infoiijMant, who.did not Beem .to see that the reply might be made to ' apply to the whole of tho question or to any part of it. Mr Selby lectured 1 at the Theatre "Royal last night under'the auspices of the Mastertoii Freethought Society'. He chose for his subject, V What the Bible has dono for the world," and. argued that' there were many inconsistences'm it, that it contained slavery and even murder, and that it had been in many ways a hindrance to the progress of civilization, Mr Selby is a very fluent speaker, and lie handles his subject in a thoroughly logical manner. He was attentively listened to throughout, and was frequently applauded, Several musical [ items, in which the Quintette Club under the leadership of Mr Keisenberg took part, were given before and after the lecture, and were much appreciated, We beg to draw the attention ot every householder and others to the liberal inducements offered by Messrs L. J. Hooper & Co., of the BoriMarche Drapery Warehouse, namely, every customer purchasing value of one shilling and upwards will receive a coupon corresponding with the amount of the purchase. On the 24th of December these tickets will be collected and one-fifth of the whole amount of purchases made will be returned in value as a Christmas box. For instance, a person purchasing 5s will receive value Is; 10s, 2s; 20s, 4s; 30s, 6s: 40s, 8s; 60s, 12s; 80s, IGb ; 120s, £l, and so on for every shilling spent. This is the best inducement wo have ever yet met with, and ought to induce every ono to purchase drapery, millinery, and clothing from L. J, Hooper & Co., Bon Marche, the cheapest and best drapers and clothiers in the Wairarapa,—Advt.
