CORRESPONDENCE.

A REPLY. To the Editor. ' Sir.—Mr McOardle, in his letter dated Pahiatua, ■ December Bth, expresses a doubt that Mr Beetham wrote to me re the Premier's visit to the Forty-Mile-Bush. Allow mo to inform Mr McCardle that your Eketahuna correspondent omitted to state that Mr Beetham wrote not only to me, but to Messrs Bayliss and Tonneralso, Mr Beetham's letters were received here on Monday, the 30th of November, while Mr McOardle—who was evidently the promoter of Mr Stout's visit —states that he did not know until 3 p,m, December 3rd, whether Mr Stout would visit the bush or not. Mr McOardle then remarks, " I pointed out to Mr Stout that the neoole of Eketahuna wars

expecting him up, and that they would be very much disappointed if he did not go." How did Mr McCavdle know we were expecting Mr Stout?" He (Mr McCardle) had just before in his letter told us that he was unable to advise us of Mr Stout's visit, because the mail had left Masterton two hours before he was aware fo the fact himself. Mr McCardle may have known the Pahiatua settlers were expecting tho visit of the Premier, but he certainly know nothing whatever of the movements of the inhabitants of Eketahuna. It is quite true that Mr McCardle explained to us when here that lie wa3 unable to let us know that Mr Stout was expected; but we have not yet forgotten the statement made by Mr McOardle at a public meeting held here last winter "that the Minister of Public Works had promised to put money on the estimates for railway extension from Mauriceville to Eketahuna" which statement, lam sorry- to say, proved to be untrue, the Minister never having given such promise; so Mr McOardle cannot reasonably be astonished if we do not take all ho says as gospel. ; I am, &c., • F, Yon Reden.
