TRAVELLER'S TALES.
A traveller who has made presumably a yery hasty trip to Australia (writes the the London'gorfespondont of the Otago Times) published his experience in the columns of the Saturday Review. In respect of Melbourne, whilo he does full justice to the beauty of its public buildings, its industry and wealth, he makes the astounding assertion (ta criminal clags is Javier it| 'proportion than that of tiny qther colony. This is an absolute misstatement of facta, In 1881 the number of persons apprehended in "Victoria pop 10,000 of fcjie population wasslß; in South Australia it was 635; in Tasmania (M 5; and in New South Wales, 873, In summary convictions in the same year Victoria occupied a similar position, being fourth on the list, while in commitments for trial and oonviefciona after commitment she was last. In matters of orime Victoria compares favorably with tho United Kingdom, for her proportion of convictions to the population is . smaller than in either England, Scotlandor Ireland.
