THE NIGHTSOIL QUESTION.

The Borough Council.was once more compelled to deal with that most unpleasant of questions, the disposal of nightsoil, last night, The residents in the South Masterton presented a very vigorous protest against tjje establishment of a depot on the hunks of the Kurupuni stream, and the Council had to give up the project, A committee has now been appointed to select a fresh site, and a report is to be brought up at, the next meeting pf the Council. From what was said there appears to be some danger qf another being made to shift it jto the 4-kura plain. When Masterton \vas first formed a borough, the Council selected a piece of land in that neighborhood for the same purpose, but the vigorous denunciation of the proposal by the press was the cause of another site being selected. The protest t))at was published then holds good- now \ritlj double force. The present water supply of the town is obtained from the gravel beds that underlie it, and as the soil of the Akura plain is very porous, this source ,/ould simply be poisoned, Even supposing that there would bB nothing detrimental to health, the very idea itself is so unutterably repulsive that it is matter for surprise that it should have been entertained ,ev,en .for a single moment; We trpst that the Committee with whom the subject js left, will turn their attention in some other direction, and find a place that will prove objectionable to no one,
