The hot weather which has prevailed during the past week appears to have done a great deal of damage in flower gardens, We have heard of two instances in which shrubs that appeared perfectly healthy had all their leaves withered in a day, and it is not an uncommon thing to see roses and other flowers shrivelled up as if they had been burnt. The rain which appeared to hang over the district yesterday, appears to have passed off again, so that the expected relief is not likely to come for a day or two,
Intending exhibitors at the first show of the Masterton Agricultural and Pastoral Society which is to be held in Messrs Lowes ■& loras yards, Renall- . street, oil the' 25th inst, are reminded that entries close with the Secretary, Mr R. J. Fitton to-morrow. Entries have already come to hand in fair numbers, and we are glad to know that they include some from the Lower Valley and Carterton, as they go a long way to prove that the attempts that have been made to foment ill-feeling between the two ends of the district over the existence of the two shows are having a negative effect. The cup presented by Messrs Littlejolni & Son, and which is to be awarded to the exhibitor who scores the greatest number of points at the forthcoming show of the Masterton Agricultural and Pastoral Society, is now on view in their window in Queen-street where it has created the admiration of all who have seen it. It is of sterling silver, standing about nine inches in height, and fof exceedingly chaste and neat design. On the one side is a plate bearing the inscription, " Wairarapa Agricultural Association, 1885," and on the other a space has been left in the shape of a shield, on which the name of the winner is to be engaved. The prize will be wel! worth carrying off, and is fit to prove an ornament to any room. Among the reminiscences of' the late "Snyder" Brown occurs the following : " The trees that afterwards fell down in the forest and crushed men, ; the sticking up of bushrangers, the oscaped convicts who were drowned in crossing rivers, the number of cases of delirium tremens, the men who were lost and perished in the bush, the narrow escapes from violent deaths, attempted outrages frustrated, or outrages in a complete state of accomplishment ; cruel desertions, acts of bravery, daring rescues, women pursued by bulls, the discovery of a now animal of enormous dimensions, seen by a stock-rider to emerge from a lake on a moonlight night, which appeared to be something between a hippopotamus and a whale, were all the emanations of my prolific pen," Really, " Snyder" must have had a fashion of going past facts, In the Exhibition there is one special exhibit, which is greatly admired, namely, the wool mats and portmanteaus made by Mr Field, of Dunedin. The whole of the exhibit has been purchased by Mr Thorburn, the clothier, of Willis-street.
