Sheet Anchor 1 1 Grace Darling 2 Trenton 3 The other starters were Acolyte, Arsenal, Bosworth, Blmk Bonny, Britisher, Brown and Rose, Cerise and Blue, Coriqlanus, Cyclops, Despot, Dunlop, First Chester, Hilltop, Kjt Nubbles, Lesbia, Liverpool, Lord Exoter, Lard Wilton, Metal, Mmervia, Nordenfeldt, Plausible, Prometheses, St, John, St. Lawrence, St, Ornorway, Thunderbolt,, Tom Brown, Velocipede, Warwick, Wing and Yellow Hammer,
The field were got away to a splendid start, Liverpool, Brown and Rose, Arsenal, and St. John being the quickest 011 their legs. Passing the stand, Prometheus, First Chester, Thunderbolt,'and Trenton maintained tke front rank, Liverpool lying about seventh, and going very strongly, As the lot neared the bridge over Saltwater River at the back of the course, Liverpooljivent through his horses and led past the scraping shed, followed by Nordenfeldt, Trenton, Grace Darling, and Sheet Anchor in the order named; but as the field swept round tho home turn into the straight,. Liverpool died away to nothing, and Sheet Anchor took command of the running, Trenton coming very fast on the outside, and lying at third. A magnificent race ensued from the distance post home' between Trenton, Nordenfeldt, Grace Darling, and Sheet Anchor, but the latter held his own gamely to the finish, beating Grace Darling by half a length, the .same interyal separating the second and third horses, Trenton coming very fast at the finish. Then followed Nordenfeldt, Liverpool, and Brown and Rose, all in a bunch. The time, three minutes, twentynine and a half seconds was the fastest on record for the Melbourne Cup by one and' a quarter seconds. / Betting at the post was as follows Nordenfeldt, sto 1; Trenton and Despot, .8 to 1; Liverpool, 10 to 1; Sheet Anchor, Brown and lose, and Grace 'Darling, 15 to 1; Acolyte and Kit Nubbles 20 to 1; others, 25 to 50 to 1,
