The result of the Pohangina crushing has been received, but the promoters say that the telegram is unintelligible, So far as the telegram can bo understood the return gives an ounce of gold to the ton, no mention being made of any other metal. The promoters are very reticent. A meeting is convoned for Saturday next of all persons interested to join in getting three tons of stone from the reef to be sent to Auckland for test by the La Monte process. Nelson, October 26. A fatal accident occurred to-day near the Haven road, when excavations were going on upon the hillside for the reclamation works, A small quantity of earth fell, and a stone, striking a man named John Winter, knocked him down. When lie was picked up he was dead, his neck being broken. The scene was heartrending, the poor fellow's wife and mother both being present. At the inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned, Winter leaveß a wife and two children. Christchurch, October 26.

Wellington, This day. The Governor entertains the officers of the American warship Enterprise at dinner to-nipht. To-morrow night they will be entertained at the Wellington Club, and on Friday night Mr W. H, Levin, American Consul, gives a ball in their honor. A party consisting of members of the Government, Colonel Whitmore and others, visited the Enterprise this morning, Blenheim, October 26. At the inquest on the body of the lad Oswald Winstanley, (who was accidently shot by his brother, the evidence showed that the lock of the carbine was defective, and caused it to go off half-cock. ■ The carbine belonged to the Defence Department, and it is supposed to have been regularly inspected. The Coroner's juiy added no rider to their verdict.
