Tfje Borough Council found itself in a curious position last night. The Mayor movd ijiat tho finance and and Works Committees should be combined, and explained that the work of the two could very easily be done by the one. He further stated that at present the Works Committee met first, and tho Finance Committee had little to do afterwards except to pass their accounts. On the other hand it TO apparent that if the Finance Committee met first they would have no means of knowing vjjat the Works Committee might vant money for, and they would have nothing to do l>ut to pass accounts and forward a statement of the Eorpiigh finances. The Mayor's motion was not carried, but it was resolved that the order of things should be reversed with regard to tjip meetings of the two committees, Wo confess that the matter appears to us as broad as it is long, and that the adoption of the Mayor's; motion was the proper way out of the difficulty,
