VICTORIA AMATEUR TURF CLUB SPRING MEETING,

Caufieid Racecourse, October 17. The second day's racing of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club's Spring Meeting was held 011 the Caufield Course to-day. The weather was dull though fine, and the attendance of the public was large. His Excellency Sir Henry Loch and suite were present. The day's pleasure was marred by a fatal accident in the race for the Caufield Cup; otherwise, everything tended to secure a successful and enjoyable meeting. No further horses wete scratched for the Caufield Cup, the betting being as follows .-—Despot, Madcap, Velocipede, and Prince Imperial, each 8 to 1; Blink Bonny, Plausible, and Welcome Jack, 12 to 1; St Lawrence, Winchester, Grace Darling, and Gratitude, each 15 to .1; Too-Too, Urara, fellowhammer, Anglesey, Blaok Diamond, Claptrap, Marie Louise, Sirooco, Vision, Israelite, 20 to 1; others ranged about 25 to 1, The Caufield Cor; distance, one mile and a half. Grace Darling l Britisher 2 Coriolanus 3 Forty-one horses started for tiiis event. After some distance had been gone, Tootoo was seen to fall, and in a -moment kardius, Tarpeia, Urara, Sirocco, Prince Imperial, Winchester, Lord Exeter, Hilltop, Claptrap, Despot, Lucky Hit, Kingship, and Lord Wilton came to the ground in one confused mass—fourteen horses in all having fallen. Nicholson, who was riding Lord Exeter, was killed; Cracknell and several other jockeys were seriously injured. The horse Urara was also killed. Blink Bonny, Britisher, Country Boy,-Coriolanus, Dirk Hatteraick Grace Darling, Impulse, Lantern, Lesbia, Madcap,- Minerva, Mozart, Plausible, Realjain, Signor, St Lawrence, The Andes, Velocipede, Yellowhammer, Anglesey, Hack Diamond,, Gratitude, Mario Louise. Vision, Welcome Jack, and The Israelite were thus left to continue the race. Grace Darling drew ahead, and won by a length, Britisher was second, and Coriolanus third, Time, 2niin 40sec. Winchester led for some distance, and was in a good position when the_ accident occurred, The greatest excitement prevailed among the spectators when the horses fell, Melbourne, October 18, The several jockeys injured have been removed to the Hospital, where they are progressing favorably,
