CORRESPONDENCE.
CIVILIANS MODE OF ARRANGING ' 'SIFLE MATCHES,
To the Eprrpji. Sill. The Civilians of Masterton challenged the members of the Carterton Rifles to fire a friendly matoh with them on Friday, the 2nd of October, or any othcv date that- would suit them. Accordingly the Carterton Rifles accepted tjie challenge for Saturday, the 10th inst. On Friday pveiiiijg the Secretary received a letter fronu meinli'er of t!}o Civilians, informing them that Saturday, being the busiest day ot the week, they would be unable to meet them, but would be glad to fire on Tuesday, the 13th inst. On Saturday, the Secretary of the Rifles, at great inconvenience to himself, went round to members of the team to inform them of postponement, travelling a distance of forty miles in doirig so, and after a deal of trouble succeeded in getting a team to meet them on Tuesday. Judge of their surprise at receiving word by a traveller at 11.30 a.m. <?n Tfiesday trjorniiig that the Civilians ywjfn# cgmHjg, jfoing haying been arranged to' commence at 4 p.m. The Carterton Rifles are naturally very indignant at Buch treatment', and think the Civilians might have had the courtesy at least to have sent a telegram in time to have prevented the expense of providing
refreshments. In future they intend to decline the honour of meeting the Civilians .111 a rifle match. The disappointment occasioned by tlio match being broken off « not the only source of annoyance, It is the inconvenience caused to members by losing so much time, and also haying to travel, in some instances, a distance of fifteen miles. I am, &c., Rifleman. Carterton, October 16.
