. United Press Association. Donedin, this day. Mrs Brown was charged at the Police Court to-day with the murder of Georgina Batler, her mother. Auckland, October 13. Lieut. Wilfred Powell, the newly appointed English Consul for the South Sea Islands, who arrived with his wife and family per Aorangi, .will have charge of all the Islands, with headquarters at Samoa.' He is proceeding thither by the Janet Nicoll. He is instructed to endeavour to cultivate friendly relations with German and American authorities and citizens in the island. He is entrusted with large and confidential power by the Government, and will travel much among the Islands, and report at length to the Imperial authorities on all matters affecting the present condition and future prospects of tho Islands, Lieutenant Powell is the author of " Wanderings in a Wild Country; or, Three Years among tho Cannibals of New Britain," having been on that station for a number of years, and made a survey for the Admiralty of the coasts of New Britain, and having been a long time connected with the Foreign Office.
