BANNISTER STREET.

Now that thei-o is another large gap in the buildings fronting the upper portion of Bannister street, the Borough Council should consider the advisabfeness of widening it. The subject was considered when M'Cartiiy's store was burnt down some years ago, but there was nothing done because the whole distance from Queen street to Dixon street could not be widened. Monday's fire has demonstrated how shallow the argument was. Had the Council taken advantage of the opening and secured the Queen street corner when there was no building on it, the whole length of the street could now be made a uniform width. At present fully threefourths of the land could be secured, and we believe that there would be no difficulty in arranging terms with the owner, Mr Maca.ua, The widening of the street is necessary for the daily increasing traffic, for protection from fire, and public health, and advantage should therefore be taken of every opportunity that offers to carry out- the work. In time the corner occupied by Messrs Duncan & Son's shop and the frontage of Messrs Kibblewhite & Cameron's blacksmiths' shop might be acquired, It would certainly be useless to wait for an opportunity to acquire the whole frontage at once.

We were shown a letter yesterday from a sweep promoter at Napier to a client in Masterton, from which it appears that a letter addressed to him and containing money arrived minus the valuable portion of its contents, As the sender of the money is positive that he put it in, he has come to the conclusion that it was taken out by some one after it left his hands,

It is now understood that Sergeant Lyons is to have temporary charge of the Wairarapa Police District. By the time, all the list of Sergeants in the colony lias been gone through, a suitable officer will, perhaps, be found. Serpeant Lyons is a, quiet but conscientious officer, who dislikes officiousness, and he should therefore be well qualified to fill the important position. He has already arrived. No progress was made with the Gas scheme at the meeting of the Borough Council last night, owing to there being no quorum on the Gas Committee. Crs Heron and Perry, who were members, had only been re-elected to the Council a short time previous, and it became necessary to make fresh appointments. Last night Messrs Heron and Perry were re-appointed, and the Committee will probably meet at an early date and report at a meeting of the Council to be held on the 15th inßfc,

The Acclimatisation Society continues to make improvements on its grounds in Chapel street, A high board fence is now being erected between the street and the ponds, and men are also engaged in deepening and widening the bed of the stream, in order to make room for quite a chain of ponds. A number of channels have also been cut, by means of which it will be possible to drain any one of the ponds without interfering with the others. The work i 3 by no means easy, on account of the large masses of roots', which form quite a network under the subsoil,

Their report should prove useful to the Board, especially as there has been an outcry against the many reserves in the districts being allowed to lie idle. Mr J, Vile obtained permission at the meeting of the Borough Council last night to lay a new sort of concrete, manufactured entirely from colonial material, in front of the Council Chambers, the object being to demonstrate that it is both cheap and durable. He lost no time iu commencing work, for this morning a gang of men were busy on the spot, and a considerable quantity of material was also deposited. The experiment will be watched with a good deal of interest, as it might lead to the flagging of the footpaths in the Borough both cheaply and effectively, In the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, before Mr H. A. Stratford, R.M., John Anderson was charged, on the information of Henry Offor, with the larceny of two horse-covers, one brush, and a pair of reins, of the value of L 4 ss, Mr Skipper appeared for the accused, who elected to be dealt with summarily. Mr Offor conducted his own case. It appeared from the evidence that Henry Offor, assistant bailiff, had on the 10th August seized certain chattels in the estate of W. H. Lee, among them being the articles alleged to have been stolen. They were removed to the Club Hotel stables in Masterton, where they were left in charge of Samuel Groves, as sub-bailiff, for some time, Offor having made everything safe, withdrew Groves. On the 12th ho released thegoods under instructions, and returned them to Lee. Two days later he was informed that the articles named in the information were missing. Following up information received, he wrote to accused asking him to return the brush and reins, and he brought articles, but they were not what were missing. Accused was a carter, and he had offered to employ him. He could swear to the horse-covers, but not to the brush. Samuel Groves said he had been left with the things by Offor, and accused came up and said, "ByJove, they don't sell my reins." He tried to take them away, but left them for some time. Subsequently, however, he removed them. Confirmatory evidence was given by J, W, Broadbent and Mr Hood. In defence accused said he was not guilty. He had been ploughing for Mr Watson, blacksmith. One day in August he took the reins and brush to Hood and Shaw's stables, while he went to Mr Watson, and on returning took them home again, When he received Offer's letter he took them to Mr Beard's, so that they might all see who they belonged to. Two days later they were returned to him. He knew nothing of the covers, He had been in NewfZealand fifteen years, and no stain of the kind had been thrown on his character, Mr Groves' statement was false. His Worship said so far as he could see accused was innocent, and he would leave the court without a stain. The case was dismissed.
