Hodgjns, of the Taratahi Hotel, notifies that he has special convenience for horses travelling the seasoi), in the shape of loose boxes and good secure paddocks. The Salvation Army made another capture yesterday morning when an old identity, who delights in calling himselt "Old Tat" was induced to ascend tho penitent form. There was great jubilation thereat in the camp. A meeting of the shooting Committee of the Masterton Rifles was held on Saturday evening, when it was resolved, in accordance witli the wish of tho Civilians to fire the return match at the Manaia butts on Wednesday next, ranges to be 200, 300, and 800 yards, any position, firing to commence at 1 o'clock sharp. A meeting of the Committee of the Masterton Horticultural and Industrial Society takes place this evening at the Council Chambers to receive a deputation from the Maatartcn Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and for general business.
The Masterton volunteer band took up its position on the balcony of the Club Hotel on Saturday night, and played a number of popular airs. A large crowd gathered in the street to hear them. The band has made excellent progress since its formation, and it is now a pleasure to listen to it.
As a wedding party was returning to Masterton yesterday evening the horses bolted, and the buggy came to grief opposite the State School. The occupants were, thrown out with considerable violence, but beyond a shaking, they sustained no injury.
The weather has been unsettled in the extreme during the past .. week, and changes of wind from .North-West to South-East and back again in the one day have been of frequent occurence. The southerly squalls of the last day or two have left a heavy layer of snow on the Tararua ranges, which look as white as a sheet, a most unusual thing in October.
j JThe celebrated horse " Mangle," which was in the hands of Mr E, Buekeridge last year, and travelled the district, is advertised by "its present owner, Mr A, Hirchbers?, to stand this season at Te Whiti,
Anglers in the Wairarapa complain that they must send to Wellington for fishing licenses. It would certainly be a convenience if the Acclimatization Society authorized one of its numerous members, resident in Masterton, to issue licenses. This would save a good deal of inconvenience, and would, undoubtedly, increase t!)o reyepue of tl)e Society from this source,
There was not a very largo attendaneo at the Theatre Royal on Saturday night whenMessrsFoley andßerkley and Misses Beaufort and Sutherland presented a very good programme, consisting of" Drawing room Echoes" "A rural retreat," and a well selected olio. The programme was gone through with good spirit, and those present enjoyed it thoroughly. A ceremony, i|i which many will be interested, topk place at the residence of Mr J. Nicol, Chapel Street, yesterday morning, when Mr Vincent Hooper and Miss Harriet Nicol, the eldest daughter of Mr Nicol, were united in the bonds of matrimony. The Rev D, Fulton was the officiating minister. Only a Belect circle of intimate friends was present. A large side table in the room was loaded with valuable and handsome presents, some of which had come from friends at a distance. The happy couple afterwards drove to Featherston,
In another column appears the programme for the. Masterton-Opaki Jockey Club's annual meeting, to be held on Boxing Day and the following Monday, It will be noticed that there are one or two changes from last year, which, we think, aro for the hotter, and also that there has been an increase in the total valuo of the stakes of £l3O. At the summer meeting last year they were worth £495; this year they are to be £625. The races on the first day will be worth £355, and on the second £270, so that there should be two days' good sport. On the occasion of the annual meeting we commented upon the steady progress tho Club had made, and we are pleased to see that another long step in the same direction has been taken.
The next outward English mail via San Franscisco closes on Saturday next.
A steward and stewardess are wanted for the Greytown Working Men's Club, Signor Otto Hug, the medical clairvoyant has taken up his old quarters at tho Club Hotel, and can be consulted today and to-morrow only.
Tho body of George Buck, who was drowned in the Wamuioru, has been found by Maoris, and they will no doubt claim the reward offered by the unfortunate young man's father, Mr F, H, Wood reports . a largely attended aujd successful sale at his Masterton Auction rooms on Saturday last. A great number of items were offered, all of which were quitted at satisfactory prices. Mr Wood's next sale will be one of canaries, parrots, and a large quantity of bird cages and merchandise, which will be held on Wednesday next, and particulars of which appear in this issue.
We draw attention to a new advertisement from the well known firm of coach builders Messrs Muir & Dixon. This firm, it will bp remembered, took the second prize at the New Zealand Industrial Exhibition, against the leading coach builders, and their walls aro plastered with first and second-class prize tickets obtained at tho local industrial exhibitions held each year. They have several first-class single and double buggies in stock, and the prices quoted for them are much below the trade prices. The usual meeting of the Featherston School Committee was held on Saturday, last. Present—Messrs Bunny (Chairman), Keys, lleDougall, Donald, Mathews, Robertson and Barton, Tho minutes of the previous meeting were rend and confirmed. The Treasurer's statement showed a balance of L2los 7d. Account passed for payment—Hiteman, L 3, The prize list as amended was passed, Tho visitors for the past month reported satisfactorily. It was resolved that Messrs Bunny and Keys make final arrangements with the head master, for the children to visit tho Exhibition during the third week of the present month.
T))ere appears to be every probability of Featherston )i°t having a cricket club this season, as tho meeting called for Saturday last again lapsod for want of a quorum. The young men of the district appear to show great apathy in tho matter, and although the Secretary has done his best to get them together, it appeal's all to no purpose. Our correspondent thinks that the rising feneration of Featherstqn are evidently losing their birthright-British and stamina—and taking to the more feminine amusements of buck jumping and dancing, In the Exhibition there is one special exhibit, which is greatly admired, namely, the wool mats and portmanteaus made by Mr FielfJ, of Dunedin, The whole of the exhibit has boon purchased by Mr Thorburn, the clothier, of Willia-street, Parties wishing to purchase any of the above can now seloo them, to-be delivered on the Ist of November,— Advt,

The weekly meeting of the Frfiethought Society last night was not so largely attended as usual,' but an interesting programme was got through, Messrs Lowes & lorns held a very successful sale of clothing and drapery, etc., at.their auction rooms on Saturday, on account of Mr J. M'Dowell, the fact of such a large quantity selling being evidence that the goods sold previously for this firm gave satisfaction. The opening cricket match of the season was played on the Park Oval on Saturday afternoon, between the Trademen's and Upaki Clubs. The ground was bumpy and in no condition for cricket. The former won on the first innings by 14-runs. The Oval would be improved if the. long grass were fed off by sheep.
