London, September 26, The preliminary examination of Mr Stead, editor of the Pall Mall Gazette, and the other persons who are being prosecuted by the Treasury in connection with the recent article, was brought to a close to-day, when the case for the plaintiff was closed. The whole of the accused were committed for trial, their defence being reserved. The homeward JNew Zealand mails via San Francisco, ex City of Sydney, dated Auckland, August 18, were delivered here yesterday. Paris, September 27. The French Government have submitted a proposal tp the European Powers that joint representation shall be made to Roumania, Greece, and Servia, with a view to prevent the spread of the present revolutionary agitation in the EuropeanTurkish provinces. W001—17,300 bales were catalogued during the past two days. The demand remains steady, but without activity. The present series of auctions close on the sth of October.
