LUNGWORM IN YOUNG SHEEP.
Mr J. C. Yallance has placed at our disposal two remedies for lungworm, which, we are sorry to say, is still of very frequent occurrence in the district. The first is a cure successfully applied by Mr W. I. Chambers,. of Repongaire, Poverty Bay, and consists in disinfecting the young sheep by the fumes, of ordinary coal tar. They are put' in a close and covered pen, into which the fumes are conducted by means of a pipe, The animak are left in for, say, 12 or 15 minutesbut. care must bo taken that they do, not get toQ much. They come out quite black, A second dose should not be necessary, but, probably, might be tried- without harm in two or three weeks Coal tar,, two pints. An old stove pipe would do very well for conducting the fumes.
The second case is best adapted for a few isolated cases. An instrument, such as a syringo, is used. The end, or opening is a long hollow needle, having a sharp projecting point, which is easily inserted into the throat between the rings, and below the thick part, and a composition squirted • in, This soon brings on coughing, and the worms are expelled. One application should be sufficient. Cost of instrument at home 225, Injection for lambs: 01. Tereb | dr; A. Carbol, 5 drops; Tr Opii | dr. For calves, four times the above strength. See Veterinary Journal, 1885.
