THEATRE ROYAL.

Wis? Lizzie Lawrence, supported by the New Zealand .Qoujedy-Drama Company, opened a short season attheTjieatre Royal last night, and succeeded in winning the admiration of the audience. The programme consisted of three parts, the first being the comedy-drama " Withered Leaves," the second varieties, and the t))iilt|e farce "Sarah's Young Man." " Withered leaves" fa an exceedingly pretty production. There 'are pom.e'vejjy interesting, and at the same tiiiie comic situations. A peculiar- strain of pathos, however, ran through them all and carried the spectator along with it. Miss Lizzie Lawrence as " May Rivers," Mr Rede as young Conyei'B (a supposed scape-grace), Mr Shiel as tho old baronet, and Miss Norris as the latter's, young wife, aiid Mr Dillon as May's lover, contributed mainly to the marked success of the performance. In the second part Miss Norris sang two songs, Miss Lena Robinson sang and danced and got an encore, Miss Lawrence gave a fine recitation, and there was al^o

some nigger business, "Sarah's Young Man" took immensely. It is full of the funniest incidents imaginable, and Miss Lawrence's Sarah and Mr Rede's young man were irresistible, The dialogue is clever and sparkling throughout, and the audience laughed from beginning to end. There was a moderate house, the rain which came on at 7 o'clock, Vf course, interfering with it. For to-night, "Sweethearts," and " Oliopatick and Spikins" have been underlined. The former has been described by a high authority as a drama of contrasts, and as one of the best ever written.,
