FIRE BRIGADE COMPETITION.
Tmsevent, which has been looked forward to with some interest by the Brigades taking part in it, eventuated in Carterton yesterday, during not at all propitious weather, whioh militatedgreatly, no doubt, against the number of spectators present, which at the onset was small, but gradually improved as tho afternoon wore on. Some little time was spent in settling preliminaries owing to objections raised by the Carterton and Greytown Brigades tcthe way in which the Masterton Brigade intended to run their hose out. After considerable discussion, which was taken part in too freely by the men, instead of leaving the matter to be settled by their respective officers, Masteiton gave way, although in justice no objection could be raised to their way of running out, as it has been adopted on many previous occasions by Brigades in competition, notably in the Duncdin meeting this year. The first event was for eight men to run fifty yards to engino, attach two lengths section, two lengths delivery hose and branch, reaching a distance of 150 feet from engine, The best two out of three runs,
Masterton toed the line first, and made fairly good time, but owing to faulty work had to bear a penalty of 4 seconds, Greytown came next, and did good work, but for a turn in the hose three-fifth second was added. Carterton then tried their hands, making slow but sure work, only two-fifth seconds being added for a slight fault, The next heat was a repetition of the former, both Masterton and Greytown, penalties for faulty work, Carterton improving p their first performance, and doing the work without a fault. Masterton and Greytown having each one heat to the good had to run off, Masterton putting again a smart run to their but still the inevitable penalty, Greytown next essayed to beat this, but were unsuccessful.
Two men drill, two entries from each Brigade, one length delivery, lOOfeet one suction hose rose, and branch to be also fixed, fifty yards run to engine
This event requires no special comment. Masterton was first, the Carterton second team making a perfect hash of it, whilst the Greytown men were so evenly matched that they did their work without a fault in exactly the same time to a fifth of a second. Masterton's second team, Ewington and Hounslow made the run of the day, completely eclipsing all, and showing Mastsrton's old form by doing the work smart and clean.
This brought the proceedings to a close, the usual cheers being given. The brigades then adjourned to the Carterton Brigade Station, and did ample justice to a substantial meal provided fqr them by their Carterton friends,
