A meeting of settlors interested in the formation of a Pastoral and Agricultural Society is convened for 3 p.m. on Wednesday next, It is notified elsewhere that an application will be made to His Excellency the Governor to proclaim certain lands between the Waipoua and Ruamahanga a, River District. The Wellington agent of the Egyptian Cigarette Co. has two announcements in another column, which should prove of interest to lovers of the weed. Mr J. H. Wallace announces his next stock sale at the Ngahauranga yards for the 9th inst. The stook already entered comprises a number of fat sheep and cattle, Mr G, C. Sage announces that his clearing sale will be continued for ono week longer, after which date the unsold balance of his stock will be disposed of by public auction, It is worthy of note that Mr A, W. As ninety-nine people out of every hundred are probably not aware of the object which its supporters endeavor to attain, the discourse should be interesting. A man named Jolly had his face severely burned yesterday atternoon through handling blasting powder m a thoughtless fashion. It appears that lie was lighting a fuse to blast a log, and at the same time held a quantity of powder in his hand. A apark from the one set off the other, and the result was that Jolly had all his beard taken off in an instant, the skin being also badly scorched. He will probably bear the marks for the remainder of his days, The following regulation under the Sale of Poisonß Act ia to come into force on November IstEvery seller of poison or of any poisonous admixture shall, before delivering the same to the purchaser, firmly affix to the box, bottle, vessel, wrapper, or cover containing the same a label with the word " Poison " in white letters on a red ground appearing thereon. Such letters to bo in block type of not lesa than a quarter of an inch in length and one-eighth of an inch in breath. Mr Leo, Inspector of school, made an ordinary and unlooked-for visit to the Fernridge school on Thursday last, and the following extract from hia" log-book" entries show that the school is not retro ■ grading:—"Theschool is in good working order, with good discipline. The last examination shewed that very creditable work was going on in the school, and the working condition, on inspection, shows that the good results are brought about by good management and diligent work. The head-teacher is always anxious to make improvements, and, year by year, there is evidence of the introduction of new plana and new methods. The written work of the school is generally well done, and the character of the instruction generally is well up to that of the average of our best schools. ■ It is to be regretted that suoh intemperate language should be indulged in by our local contemporary with regard to the school district question. The application of such terms as " mendacity," " mangy" and others of a like nature to respectable citizenß who are carrying out what they deem a public duty, with regard to a matter in which they cannot possibly be influenced bypersonal considerations, may safely be taken as proof that those who .use them have an exceedingly weak caso. The statement to the effect that children from another district have never been excluded at any school, and that teachers and Committees try to attract them, is absolutely false, aud we have to go no further than Wellington tor proof, Whatever may be the provisions of the Education Act, it must be perfectly clear that the intention is to give the parents residing within given districts the power to manage the school, or Bchook, which their children attend,
A general meeting of the Wairarapa Pastoral Society is convened for the 19th Inst, at noon, to consider the proposal to hold future shows in Masterton, The Yen. The skating rink will be open in the Theatre this evening at the usual time. The presence of the Brass Band should render the evening very enjoyable, In the District Court yesterday afternoon Mi Bunny, on behalf of Mr P. J. Preston, of Wellington, presented an application to declare Annie Eliza Hayward, of Featherston, a bankrupt. Mr Freeth, who presided, granted the application,
