THE HOLLOWAY SANATORIUM.
This Institution, founded by Mr Thoj. Holloway, at- St. Ann's Heath, noar Virginia Water, was formally opened on Jun.e 15 by,the Prince of Wales, Th« Prince, accompanied by several members of the Royal Family, was met at the Virginia Water railway station by Mr G, Martin Holloway and Mr Driver Holloway, and- conducted to the Sanatorium. In asking His Highness to declare th# building open, Mr Martin Holloway said his late relative had devoted the last fifteen years of his life .to the consideration of the best means of alleviating the condition of those who \yere mentally affiigtec], Tjie Sanatorium waMhen do, olared open, after which an insfjrefcion of the building was made. It stauds on an eminence in the midst of a well-wooded country, and presents a conspicuous object for miles around. The principal apartments are decorated in thejbiist Style, and in all the same idea of cneerfulness and suggest! veness is carried out, The institution and the surrounding grounds include some forty acres, The building,containing about 600 rooms is disposed on four floors, and capable of accommodating about 250 patients. The expense hitherto incurred is about £300,000. The idea of establishing such an institution was suggested to Mr Holloway at a meeting presided over by the Earl of Shaftesbury in 1801, in which the need of suitable provision for persons of the middle clasi( with mental diseases waß_ |trongly insisted uponJ The i'dea thei( put forth Vfis subsequently taken up by Mr Holloway, who was desirous of devoting his some oharitable purpose, which should benefit'without pauperising those whom he sought to assist, He was assisted in the development of the scheme by his relives, who have taken over tho finaricioMUrden of the undertaking. It is, however, desired to make the institution as self-supporting as possible.
