At the recent examination in freehand drawing. 47 per cent were passed in the two upper standards of the Fernridge School. This is the first year that this school has'competed. It would be interesting to know which way of spelling the name'' Mangatainok'e" the Lands Department intends to adopt. Hitherto it lias nearly always appeared with the final o, which is wrong, and in' a proclamation in the last Gazette there is it final a, which is absurd. According the Maories " Mangatninuko" is correct. The three retiring members of the Masterton Borough Council this year are Crs Perry, Heron and Johnston. .It is notified that nominations will close at noon on Monday, 31st inst,, and the poll will be taken on Thursday, the 10th September, .We understand that the retiring Oounoillors will olfar themselves for re-elec-tion.

The " Grand Panorama of the World" was shown at the Theatre Royal on Saturday evening to a limited audience. The views presented were very good throughout. They do not consist of paintings on canvas, but of transparencies ■enlarged from original photographs, which are shown by lime light. This evening a number of Masterton views will be presented.. There is to be'a matinee at 4 p.m. . ; A young man named Henry Ashmore was arrested on Friday night last at Gladstone by Constables Darby and Eccleton, and was brought up before W. Booth, J. P., and charged with stealing a billiard. rest valued at 255, the property of J, McLennan of Featherston, in March last, also with being a vagrant within the meaning of Section 28 of the Police Offences Act, The prisoner pleaded not guilty to both charges, and by the request of Constable Darby was remanded to Featherston.

The sitting of the Resident Magistrates Court this morning was a very short one. There was no criminal business, and there were only two civil cases set down for hearing. In the first of these, W. Prangnell v C. Oatliam, claim £2 9s sd, defendant did not appear, and judgment was given by default for amount claimed, and costs Cs, while in the second, John Russell v G. Haskell, claim £2O, and interest on a promissary note, neither party appeared.

Mr T. E. Price makes an announcement in connection with his photographic studio that should be 'of some interest to the public. It is to the eflect that pending the erection of new 'business premises ■for Messrs Oazneau and Conolly in Wellington, Mr Cazneau will take charge of that branch of Mr Price's business in Masterton, Mr Oaznean's well known ability and experience should recommend him to all who are desirous of having photo 3 taken,

A strong North-West gale sprang up early yesterday morning, and continued to blow without, abatement till shortly before daylight this morning, when it brought up heavy rain, After this the wind gradually died down. Heavy rain is still falling in the hills, and all the rivers in the valley are likely to he in high flood this afternoon, Except that some fences were blown down and several windows broken, no damage was done by the gale. There was a large attendance at the meeting of.the Freetliought Society last night, and the programme that had been arranged proved unusually good. Songs were given by Mrs Wrigley ind Messrs Bentley, Coker and Sant, Messrs Coker Bacon and T. Wrigley gave recitations, and Messrs Keisenberg, Lungquisfc and Lai)gensiepen instrumental selections, the latter playing on the zither coming in for a well merited encore. Mr Mackay presided. Mr R. S. Hawkins has issued a circular to the shareholders of the Wellington Meat Export Company, in which he says with reference to the proposal to amalgamate with the Wellington Meat Preservingand Refrigerating Company:— "Every Shareholder is asked to double hisinvestment-thatis,havingpaiduphis£6 per share to become liable for another £5, a liability none of us ever contemplated. We are asked to hand over our £14,420, already subscribed, to another Company, and become liable to the creditors, present and future, of that • Company for £14,420 more, and, in doing this, we who are stock-opera p&jt for ever with our single existing "guarantee against absolute monopoly in the n>eat- trade. I hope you will agree with rae that these proposals are of far too gr&vo a nature to be decided by a blind vote, and that you will not give any proxy to the' Directors, 'or if you have given one, wil} at once withdraw it; and that you will not sign the printed Memorandum they ask you to Bign, until, at any rate, the question has been most fully discussed." This is not by any meaiiß flattering to the Directors of the Company, who, it may reasonably bo proßumed, know on which side their bread is buttered just as well as Mr Hawkins does. • Tho amalgamation would really mean a company with double the present capital, in which the present shareholders of the Meat Export Company would hold half the shares, There is, however, one part that is worthy of the most serious consideration, naniely the allusion to a monopoly in the meat trade, Nearly the whole of the retail trade in Wellington is at present in the hands of two companies, who work hand in hand with regard to prices, so tlmt a monopoly may be said to bo already in existence. If Mr Hawkins can see his way to break this down he will deserve the thanks of the settlers in the district,

A meeting of the Soliool Commissioners was held at Wellington on Thursday last to consider the claim of the Masterton Town Lands Trust to' certain land that had been taken away from thein. It was stated that the Minister of Lands had reviewed the case, and considered the' claim a just one. He suggested that the ten acres from the School Reserve adjoining the Park which were asked for might be transferred, provided the School Commissioners were willing. Mr Beethai)), M.H.$„ and Mr Hare attended on the part (|f the trustee?, and pointed outlst, That the claim put forward by the Masterton trustees was fair and equitable for' the injury comraittcd by the Land Department, 2nd. That the lands vested in the trustees under the Act of 1871 were carefully managed for -the benefit of the people, and for the promotion of education within the district, and that considerable sums of money Jiave been voted by the trust for this object, witli valuable sites for school buildings, 3rd, That a public road has been given by the trustees in lieu of the one erroneously taken and conveyed to W. ii. Rhodes, besides the loss to the trust of part of one of their town acres. Mrßryce pointed out that the section could not be transferred without a fair consideration being given, and that the Government, having wrongfully conveyed the land, ought to make the loss gopd; . -plie Commissioners adopted this view, and Mr Beetham promised to see Mr Ballance again oil the subject.

..There were .no less than-throe fire nlarma< within twenty-four hours,' counting from - noonon Saturday till' noon on' Sunday, and all of.them were caused by blazing chimneys, fortunately no damago was done in either case. These frequent alarms seem to show that the residents in the town are entirely careless about, having their ehimney swept'.' They cannot always expect that if a chimney 'catches fire they will always escape with the mere scare, because wooden houses very frequently get burned down through the soot in the chimney catching fire. The only means by which people can be induced to pay more attention to this matter exists in the imposition of heavierfines. It is not a pleasant remedy, certainly, but the public safely demands something of the kind.
