The Masterton Volunteers parade this evening. Mr Henry Sedcole hassold one-eighth of an aero nearly opposite Oreive's Hotel, Pahiatua, at the rate of £264 per acre. The second meeting called by Mr Column Phillips for the purpose of considering the advisableness of establishing a Starch Factory in Grey town takes place on Saturday night in the Institute. A chimney on fire caused some alarm in Greytown on Wednesday about 6 p.m. The bell rang an alarm and the Brigade turned out in full force, but fortunately were not required,

The Greytown Amateur Christy Minstrels give their first performance in the Town Hall, Greytown, on Monday night. The proceeds are for a charitable purpose. We have no doubt the Hall will be well filled. A dance follows the entertainment,

TheMastertonFire Brigade, while practicing last night, had a good run that was not laid down in the programme, Shortly after eight o'clock an alarm was given on the fire-bell, and there being a bright blaze in Hall-street, they proceeded there in double-quick time. It was found that the cause was only a blazing chimney.

The Committee has picked the following football team to play against Carterton on Saturday, at Mastertonßacks A. Thompson, J. Perry, O'Connor (capt), Holmwood, C. Perry ; forwards, Ranginui, Whatman, Welch, Kibblewhite, Ingles, Hounslow, Ewington, F. Perry, Beechey, W. Day. Emergencies—back, E. Pelling; forwards, J. Williams, Joe Karaitiana.

Ourlocal contemporary will acknowledge, probably without referring back to our Tuesday's issue, that when we pointed out the errors he had fallen into in making a calculation of what a dairy factory would pay in proporty tax and rates, we referred to the error in the amount of rates only. We pointed out to him that personal property was n.ot rated, as' he assumed it was.

Judgment was given in the sly grog sellinsr case ill which W. Blinkhorne was defendant, in the Resident Magistrates Court at 3 p.m. yesterday. Mr Stratford, It, M.. said that the case appeared to him to have been very clearly proved, while on the other hand, defendant was indebted to his counsel, (Mr Bqnny) forcing every point in his favor that was available. He did not wish to deal harshly, at the same time it was his duty to imposo such a fine as would net as a 'deterrent to defendant as well as others, Tho fine would be £ls. The Court costs amounted to 17s, and the expenses of witnesses to £3, both of which he was ordered to pay, In addition to this, the liquor seized was ordered to.be forfeited. The prize list of the Wairarapa Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Society in connection with Tuesday's show, has now been tnade up, We glean from it that Mr Elkins carrried off the lion'p share of the prizes, having taken twenty first and nine second. Mr R. H. Wilson stands next with seven first and one second, and Mr P. Rogan third with six first and two second. Messrs W, McKenzie and W, G. King are ties for fourth place, each having been' awarded three first and four second prizes. The next in order are Messrs T. J, James with three first and two second, and Mr M. Wilton with three first and one second, All the others have taken three or under. The total number of prize-takers is twenty-six. The value if the prizes taken' is £2B 12s, We are pleased to learn that the Society is in a good financial position, and that, after the prizes and expenses have been paid, there will be a fair balance left to carry forward to the credit of next year. The prizes will bo paid over on Saturday next,,

Captain Edwin telegraphed at noo'ii " Bad weather betwetm West arid South and-South-East, Glass further 'rise, and much rain and colder weather."' Elder Bros., of Langdale, have contributed LIOO towards paying ofl' the debt of the Wairarapa Agricultural and Pastoral Society. ; Mrs Haines, of Greytown, has entered an action for-tho recovery of LBOO from the N.Z, Accident Assurance Company, on account of a . policy hold by her late husband. The regular meeting of the Masterton Tent, 1.0. R., is adjourned until Thursday, 3rd October, to enablo members to attend the performance of "Poor Mike" at the Theatro to-night. The winning numbers in Zulu's sweep appear in another column. The first prize went to tho custodian of an institution in Greytowi), the second to a well known farmer on tho Upper Plain, and the third to a gentleman in Masterton. A public test of the Harden Star Hand Grenade will be made in the paddock adjoining Mr F, H, Wood's auction room at 4.30 p.m. to-morrow. The trial should be very interesting, as an easy means of extinguishing firo is a matter of considerable importance, There is therefore likely to be a large attendance.

We remind our readers of the service of song "Poor Mike" which is to be given by the Masterton Choir, under the leadership of Mr Pearson at the Theatre Royal this evening. The music is very nicely arranged throughout, and as the choir has carefully practised it for some time past, it islikely to be given with excellent effect. Mr Berkley has kindly undertaken tho task of reader.

The following figures in connection with the recent examination in freehand drawing should prove of more than ordinary interest in Masterton, as they show what a splendid position tho local school occupies. The number of pupils passed in freehand drawing at the eleven schools which furnish the highest numbers are, Masterton, 32, Thomdon, 17, Mount Cook, 13, Terrace, 11, Featherston, 9. Fernridge, 6, Lower Hutt, 6, Upper Hutt, 5, Greytown, 4, Te Aro, 4, and Cartoiton, 3. The f otal number of pusses was 128, so that Masterton has furnished exactly one quarter of tho number. We doubt whether such an honorable position has ever before boen obtained by any other school in the district.

The experiences of Timothy Morari inMasterton will not rank among his pleasant recollections. Yesterday morning he appeared in the Resident Magistrate's Court, charged with having exceeded the bounds of ebriety. He pleaded to be. let off, and said that he had only just arrived from Napier, and if his Worship would only overlook his failing on that occasion, he would never appear before him again. Mr Stratford looked straight at him, and asked, "Do you mean that?" " lea, your Worship," was the solemn assurance. His Worship evidently had his doubts, for he inflicted a fine of ss. Then it was found that Tim had no money, and he was on the point of" taking it out," when several of the frequenters of the court made up the amount, This morning Tim stood in tho same place, conscious of the promise he had given and broken. He was fined 10s, with the alternative of 48 hours, and there bein» no sympathisers this time, he was allowed to spend his time in reflection.
