The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY, AUGUST 20, 1885. THE PASTORAL SOCIETY.

We ai'u afraid that the public meeting which was held yesterday to consider the advisableness of forming an Agricultural and Pastoral' Association for North Wairarapa did' not adopt tho wisest course that was open. No fault can be found with the course pursued by Messrs Hawkins and Meredith, for their object was simply to do everything in reason to induce the Wairarapa Agricultural and Pastoral Society to shift its show site from Carterton to Masterton. It was admitted on all hands that the reply that had been received from the Society when a similar attempt was made a short time ago, was not an expression of the opinion of the society at all, but merely that of one member; and that being'so, it was nothing but fair that a further attempt should be made to obtain the desired result without forming another society. It is absurd to say that two societies can flourish just as well as one. If a sum of, say, 1500 per annum is required to support one society, and the settlers subscribe that, it does not follow that the same amount would also bo forthcoming for the second one. The probabilities are that the subscriptions received towards the funds of the two would not be much larger than what tho one has hitherto received, and that the only difference would be in the entry and gate money. This would mean smaller piizes, and an inferior position for both Societies, The facts must be patent to all who have reflected over the matter, and it was from premises like these that Messrs W. 11. Bertham, Meredith, and Hawkins argued. It is true that th& motion for holding another conference was agreed to; but the position taken up by the meeting can only be offensive to the existing Society, The meeting in reality formed itself into an independent society, and then said "If you do not come up to Masterton, here we I are, ready to start in opposition to you. You better take our advice and comply with our demands." There is nothing of a conciliatory nature in this, and it is to be feared that the manner adopted will cause the failure of the undertaking,
