WAIRARAPA EAST COUNTY COUNCIL.
The following portion of our report of the meeting of the Wairarapa East County Couucil was crowded out of our yesterday's issue
engineer's report,
The Engineer presented a report on the County roads, to the following effect : —The contracts of Messrs McLeod and Buddon for river bank protective works at Te Ore Ore have been completed. Mr G. Mackay's contract for formation on, the Te Ore Ore-Bideford road Jias been completed,, except the removal of - one or two slips, for which £2 10b is' recommended to be retained.' Other works on that line are in a forward state. The repairs to theTinuißrigde.are all butcompleted. Eeoenfc heavy floods have rendered it necessary to alter the plans. The ourrent playing on the bank close to the Tinui pier haa so torn it away that, the position of the bridge was very precarious, and measures had to be adopted to pro-
tept the bank, Thi total •Bum required to mako the bridge safe would probably amount to double; the - original estimate. The quarrying in connection with But^ess',contract.was proceeding satisfactorily. It was, recommended that Mr Thompson's contract be extended from 250 to 600 yards. The work of removing Blips from the Dreyer's Rock road was at present being carried'out. Mr Duffy's bushfalling contract on the Eketahuna to Tinui road was progressing slowly, but was in other respects faithfully carried out, Mr Dawson intends to start; work on the Te. Hoe bridge next week,; The Engineer had visited the Manawatu, and inspected the ferry plant, which he saw safely stored, The value of the plant'is LB6 10s, The ■ Mauriceville portion of the Forty Mile : Bush road is iu a very dilapidated condition, the formation being utterly ruined for many chains in length, the metal being thoroughly mixed with the mud. But for the temporary repairs executed by Messrs Macara and Vile, by filling in the deepest and most dangerous holes at their own expense, the line would undoubtedly' ere now have been closed. The Engineer ; J}|)d, when possible, visited the various owners of property upon which suitable gravel reserves can be procured, and ,he recommended that the Government be urged, when locating, future roads, to make suitable gravel reserves,
FINANCE. Beetham for the sum of £1125, an amount of the Masterton-Wai-mata road, and of £lB7 on account of the Ruamahanga Protective work, as the Council had incurred the expenditure and had to pay. interest on the money. That the proceeds of the sale of land the ownors of which cannot be found, should be handed over to the County in which 'the land is situated and placed by the' Council to the credit of the County or Road Board, the amount to be applied to the cohstruction of roads or other public works. That the Council direct the attention of the Engineer to the fact that the expenditure on the repairs to the Tinui Bridge has already exceeded the estimate by £SO, and that a corresponding reduction be made from other items on the Masterton Waimata road, and that the Committee urges the Council to strict adherence to the estimates. That any balance due on the, bushfalling contract of Mr Duffy which cannot be taken out of the original grant, be charged to grant Nq 2. That in all Council contracts it be provided that the cost of supervision required on works, after the contract date of completion, be charged tothecontractor and deducted from the contract money.
