Having been unable, to carry the proposal to guarantee an annual sum of L 97,000 to cover interest, over and abovo working expenses, for the East and West Coast (Middlu island) railway, the Canterbury members have bethought themselves of another way of having their pet scheme carried out. They now want the Government to undertake the work, and are anxious that a quarter of a million, shall 1m voted this .session. If the work were one which would be at all likely to pay, there could he no objection to it, and in any case there is little, or no fault, to be found with the projector!), for if the line were formed by the Government, there would benochanceof hole and cornet work for the sake of obtaining a heavy subsidy, and a vast extent of land would remain in the hands of the Government, We are, however, of opinion that the line would never pay working expenses, ' It would matter little how a lino across the highest chain of mountains in the colony were worked, it would still be found that coal could be brought move cheaply to Christ church by. steamers from the West Coast via Lytlelto'n, and that heavy merchandise would be carried the same way. .The line would simply be for passengers and mails, and as such, would not pay more than a small proportion of working expenses.
