AN EXPLANATON.

[To the Editor,] Sir—l have been much surprised at the references to myself which have appeared in your paper in the last two reports of the meetings of the North Wairarapa Benevolent Society. I did some few weeks ago ask the Secretary, Mr D'Arcy, if he thought the Society would give me a fow pounds to pay one or two small tradesmen's bills; informing him at the same time that I should no longer require the 10s per week which the Society had been giving me. I • should not have made this requent to Mr D'Arcy had I not been under the impression that the whole Government subsidy to the. money which waß handed to the society on my behalf, would, if I bo desired, and so required, be used fpr my' benefit, as most of it, or the equivalent to it, had then been. I emphatically deny that J have ever expressed dissatisfaction or ingratitude with.the Benevolent Society jn regard to its distribution of funds to myself, and 1 take this opportunity of thanking tiio members of t]ic Committee and tlie Secretary, for their past kindness. The £5 which was voted to me about a month ago I have not drawn, nor do I intend to draw it. I am, etc., Louisa Xoung (late Louisa Bowser.) Masterton, August, 7th, 1885. [Our reports simply contained what actually transpired at the meetings and nothing more, though, perhaps, a good deal less. It will also be noticed that we avoided giving offence by witholding th9iiame.—Ed. W.D.]
