BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.
The monthly meeting of the North Wairarapa Benevolent. Society was held at 4 p,m. yesterday. Present-Mr M,Caselberg (Mayor) in the chair, -Miss/Mird, Revs W. E. Paige, D. Pulton, and J. N. Buttle, Messrs R. Brown (Treasurer), and D'Arcy (Secretary), , Some discussion took place as to the meaning of the resolution passed at a previous meeting V jßho effect that the salary of the Secmiy should be £5, and five per cent on the subscriptions collected, the question being whether that included special , subscriptions, and sums received from benefit performances, and it was resolved that ha be paid commission on all sums collected by himself. The Rev J. N, Buttle reported the case of a widow who lived with a family in the town, and had nothing to maintain her. There was money due to her, but she was, unable to get it in. It was resolved that the Secretary be instructed to see to'the matter, and afford relief, if necessary. In reference, to the same case it wub stated that-when her husband died on the other i'slanc|gS left some property, the title for whibAMiould not be at once-cleared. Mr Brown brought under notice the case of a woman whose husband had got into prison, and who had no means to support herself and her child: it was resolved that 108 per week be allowed till the next monthly meeting. The ease of a family of a married man with three, childre" living in Renall-street was brought up/ Aom statements made it appeared \faflßtho man had boen offered work occasions, but. had refused to take it; also, that lie had represented himself to bo a blue ribbon man, whereas it was shown that if by any chance he earned anything, he always spent it in drink. Somo disoussion took place as to what should bo done undor the circumstances, The members present agreed that the case was a hard one for the woiuan and children, but could not see their way clear to do anything that would support the head of the family, Under the circumstances it was resolved not to do anything in the case at present, The Secretary was instructed to ascertain the cost of sending two families to Australia, where their headi have been ascertained to be, .Further relief was granted in several on the books of the Society. tary was instructed to convene the annual meeting for Wednesday next at 4 p.m. Several sujall accounts were passed for payment.
