CORRESPONDENCE.

THE BENEVOLENT SOCIET^ (To the Editor.) Sir, —On Sunday last it was reported ' to me that a woman, and her four chil- / dren, living in a shed below Dr Hoskitig's. residence, were starving; that the unfortunate woman could not speak a word of English, and her husband had left her destitute. My informant had sent a supply of food and clothing by their servant, and reported the matter to some members of the Benevolent Society. From the charitable remarks made, and the tone of the letter.in Tuesday's Ditty, signed "Charity," I am led to believe that the abovo case is the one referred to in the letter, and I ask put the true state of affairs before jm readers, On Sunday aftnrnoon I visited the place, and found a family consisting of/af/ier, mother, and three children,- with no / indications of starvation or want of cloth-/. ing. They had firewood, fowls, and some / valuable sheep dogs, and in reply to/ queries the man stated he had always been able to supply his family with fqod, but was now looking for a job of' shepherding, and was wanting to se]Me of his dogs. He could do any kind of}ork, stone-breaking or other, and was filling to take any that, offered. Arrangtmients have been made for him to break/stones at a fairremuneration; until he/can get more suitable employment. ■ Tho woman is Danish, but speaks English very well. I am, &c., '' R'. Brown, Hon. Troas. N.W.B.S.
