ANNUAL PLOUGHING MATCH.

The annual ploughing match, held under the auspices of the Masterton Farmers' Club, came off in Mr D. Carman's paddock, Lower Manaia, yesterday. There was a very fair attendance of visitors, and the two refreshment booths wero kept pretty busy. The ploughing all round was very good, and above, tho' average, although the best men did not show such good work as they have produced in former yeara. All who competed, showed by their work that they were ploughmon, and left a good seed furrow, The field chosen for tho operation was a suitable one in every respect, except that it was a bit patchy, ind gave considerable choice of ground. The judges of the ploughing, Messrs A. W. Cave and Jno. Morris, did not arrive on the ground until nearly 4 o'clock, so that the competitors, who had finished by 3 o'clock, were clear away with their teams. The following i 8 tlte result:—

Double Furrow, Ist Prize £s,2nd £2F, Winter Ist, with a Duncan & Sons plough; Oswald Percy 2nd, Reid & Gray ; S. Broom 3rd, Reid and Gray.; best feering and finish,. F. Winter. Single Furrow; Ist prize £4, 2nd £2— Samuel Foreman Ist, Hornsby plough; (also for the best feering in his class, and for the best ploughed ridge on the ground, E. McEwen's special prize of a guinea); Walter Morrison 2nd, Duncan and Sons plough; John Kilminstor 3rd, with local plough made by Watson, , jJjL For bestteamof threehorses—fflKfepport, Horses owned by D, GuilaT^ For best pair horses, H. Crowder, Horses owned by E. Chamberlain, Also Mr Jas. Ross' special prize of one guinea for thj best matched pair of horses for farm purposes. For the best groomed horse—Samuel Broom, Horse owned byT. Chamberlain, also special prizes given byTownsendand Oowper and G. S, W. Dalrymple. For, best kept harness, special prize of one guinea given by J. Elliott and Co.— S. Liddington competitor and owner; Samuel Broom, in the double furrow, had 2nd prize, but on counting over the furrows it was found he had one too many on one side. Messrs W. Lowes, and J. Harding were the judges of. horses and harness, and Messrs, Cave and Morris of the ploughing. The Committee present were Messrs G. Heron, E. Chamberlain, IX Carman, J, Rayner, J. Hessey, and the Secretary, Mr R. J. Fitton, and they worked well together to make everything go off successfully.
